Note: I have posted this before, but some people may need help NOW.
Well here are two Awesome tips for beginners that I found very helpful in the game:
1. Getting a GOOD TWO-HANDED weapon: Ok, this teaches you how to get a good weapon, first, try to find a Rusty Two Hander, once you get one, go to the Sect Camp, find a Templar who is alone, smash him! Once you get to the ground (if he gets you back), wait till you get back up and drink a potion or take some food, now he will be on half health (or around that), now finish him off (this might take 2+ turns if you can't fight  ). Now take his weapon, you get a free Light Two Hander which is awesome, it might take you a while to get enough strength though, now try and get 2 handed sword skills.
(CAUTION: If you want to be a "good little angel", don't do this, but I recommend it, it worked for me both times I clocked this game)
2. Getting TONS of Potions: Here is the best way to get heaps and heaps of potions: 1st, when Saturas and the water mages trust you enough teleport there and when Rhiodorian (I think it's Rhiodorian, the name doesn't matter anyway, just as long as they are a water mage) is standing behind Saturas, smash him (he won't even lift a finger!). Now take his potions, hmm, lets say
1000+ Health Potions
1000+ Mana Potions
600+ Sprint Potions
Pretty sweet eh? 
(CAUTION: If you want to be a "good little angel", don't do this, but I recommend it, it worked for me the second time I clocked this game and REALLY helped)

My best tip would be to save early, save often, and save in several different slots
