Some type of dam. indicator is needed. The comment about "keeping the game realistic" is garbage. Yes, I thought the damage skins in Wizardry 8 worked very well indeed. I also felt that this tecnique yielded input similar to what you might get from real life meelee. And when you would score a critical upon an unbloodied foe and that foe would expire it only added to the drama and siuspense of combat. My problem with Wiz 8 is that you couldn't take two steps wiyhout walking into combat.
