is this quest an optional quest? or do you actually have to do it? also what do you get for doing it?

I did the quest just for the Xp and you can sell the books later on if you've completed the quest. |

I did the quest quite late in the game. There wasn't any ore left in the whole of the land within the barrier! I had it all! Just from selling all the weapons and animal trophies I'd found. |
