Hissing problem

Hi

My problem is an annoying hissing sound when playing the music, enabling footsteps, and with some NPC conversations. The music's a bust - it sounds like it's being played on a 1920 victrola. With footsteps, they break through the silence with a loud background hiss; step/hiss [silent pause] step/hiss [silent pause].

running: PIII 850 100mzh fsb
384 MB PC100 SRAM
Geforce 4 Ti4200 (I know, way too much for this CPU)
TB Montego II pci card (Dell OEM)
W98
The drivers are up to date, although the sound card drivers have not been updated for a couple of years. The standard Aureal drivers on vortexofsound say "NOT for Dell OEM", and I figure that's me, so I have not tried them. I have not had this problem with any other Dx 8 game.
