Fading Suns was made by some White Wolf people.
Oh and Cow man, BattleTech counts. They have the MechWarrior RPG. We played that one for years on end...

I liked the feel of the PC game Fading Suns (strategy). I was never able to finish it since I had some problems with it - like not being able to figure out why I could not build another factory. It seems like there was an unpublished limit that I did not plan for.

What is the RPG like?

The RPG is very intriguing. It's a post-apocalyptic world, as you know, but the church and the aliens all play a more substantial role than in Emperor of the Fading Suns (which I found to be way too complex for my small mind). There is a very well developed semi-feudal culture, and a vibrant game world. Some of the rules were awfully arcane, and I understand they fixed them for the D20 version (which I look forward to trying eventually).

Well, the Fading Suns universe borrowed heavily from both Dune and Warhammer 40k. In fact, you'll find a lot of nice things from both universes in Fading Suns (it's the game we currently play btw). Now go figure. It's medieval Science Fantasy...

Star Frontiers!
   

When I was a kid we used to play Star Frontiers a lot. It isn't as complex as D&D but was a blast to play.

Oh my, Star Frontiers was horrible ! It was Gary Gygax' answer to Marc Miller's Traveller. You had nine whole planets to travel to, 4 dieffernt player races, three different occupations and wow, ONE enemy race who were ALWAYS evil!

I sold it a few years ago for a lot of money . But I agree, their adventure modules were good.

I haven't played for a few years, our Fading suns-campaign never got off the ground and my Vampire - The Masquerade-campaign is waiting for a creative storm and a few feeks of spare time.

Twilight was brutal, first game that we really took seriously.
My first memory of Twilight is when in the first campaign, first session we approached a battered farming community somewhere in Poland. I was a intelligence officer with a quite good language skills, but my polish was terrible. I also had a soviet helmet I took from a wandering soldier we encountered a while ago.

When we saw a group of farmers approaching with rifles and shotguns, I popped my head out of the nearly busted APC we had 'acquired' and greeted them with nearly perfect russian. They came into a rather hastly conclusion about my nationality from the language and the helmet and fired in terror. First shot missed, but the second farmer was a bit more luckier, drilling his hunting rifle bullet right into my face, back to the ol' drawing board for me and back to the campaign with a new character

Since that moment, I just couldn't get enough of the game. Survival was all but easy, the campaigns were long and exhausting, gaming sessions spanned up to ~12 hours.. ahh, those were the days

OMG, how could I forget Ars Magica? That sainted game of yore- how brill it was!

Is 4th ed any good (or even available any more?)

Well, White Wolf put out 3rd edition Ars Magica, but then Atlas Games bought Ars Magica and then they put out the 4th edition. I have not seen 4th edition yet, but I heard one person say that they liked 3rd edition better. Would be interesting to check it out though.
And yes, I agree, Ars Magica was indeed a wonderful and brilliant game. Very original and well done. Much more enjoyable than Vampire, imho. Now I'm just waiting for an Ars Magica crpg to come out.

BTW, I finally bit the bullet and bought the D&D 3d ed. Player's Handbook. How tasty a morsel! Blows away 2d ed (obviously). Just a brill system.

Took you long enough

Seriously, I wouldn't even have bothered by my (at that time) 9 year old was very excited by it (don't ask why - I was never able to find out), and I figured "better than drugs" and so got a copy.

Its not a bad system. I am still not crazy about it, but it works fairly well.
