My first impressions and a question |
|
Hi,
I just bought/installed Morrowind this afternoon, and so far,
I am quite impressed. I've been playing for about 2-3 hours
now, with no lock-ups or other problems. Visually, the game
is stunning -- the night sky is really something to behold.
The water is something else -- as you walk through it, it leaves
disturbances in the surface!
The framerate is OK for me, but definitely not what I've become
accustomed to with my fairly beefy machine. I did notice a
FPS improvement by installing the "unofficial patch" that removes
the Safedisc crap which is, itself, quite a poorly coded resource
hog. Bethesday -- please remove the Safedisc crap in the next
patch so us legitimate purchases of your products do not have to
apply "unofficial patches" to get decent performance! After all,
you included a piece of paper in the box explaining that Safedisc
consumed extra system resources, so why force it on your paying
users (the pirates will pirate regardless of the presence of
Safedisc)?
Here's my machine:
Athlon 1600XP (1.4GHz)
Epox 8KHA+ mobo
1 Gig of Mushkin PC2100 DDR
PNY GeForce3 Ti200 (overclocked some)
Soundblaster Audigy
Windows XP
The game is fully playable but not "silky smooth". I am using
the Nvidia drivers (23.12) and did *not* have to make any changes
to my system settings (like the audio accel, for example). I
have the clipping plane maxxed out and the dynamic shadows on
50%. I also enabled the pixel shader option (for Geforce 3 and
higher).
One niggle I have -- I wish that the NPC would not stop and hail
me everytime I run by them, after I've already spoken to them. I
can be a little annoying to pass by several people in one area and
have them all spouting stuff like "come talk, traveler" and whatnot.
Nothing big, just a very minor annoyance.
Now, for my question:
I'm still in the initial town where the boat dropped me off (can't
remember the name). All of the NPC's tell me that there is not
much in this town other than the Allarin's (or something like that)
store/hotel. I tried to go into Allarin's place and rest, but it
kept telling me that resting was not legal in that area. Where am
I supposed to rest when all of the NPC's say that Allarin has beds
for rent, but it won't let me rest there (I don't even see a bed)
and he does not say anything about selling me a bed in dialog?
Anyway, that's it for now. For those of you who are on the fence
as to whether to get this, I'd say go ahead and give it a shot.
I bought my copy at Best Buy today, since they have it on sale for
$44.99 (normally $49.99) with a $10 gift card through mail-in
rebate. I also had a 20% discount coupon from the current PCGamer,
so all said and done, it only cost me about $25 for MW :^)

How to rest in Seyda Neen |
|
To rest in the Inn you must talk to the person and buy a room. Then the inn keeper will tell you what room to go to, then you can use the beds. Just going up and trying to sleep without first talking to the Inn Keeper is illegal. |

You can also just go a little way out of town and sleep.
If you lower the AI slider then the NPC won't try to talk to you unless you are close to them, making it easier to skirt around them... |

Download the 28.32 patch (there are better ones for xp/nt), latest drivers REALLY improve it a lot. |
