I want to be a close range fighter and I was wondering what the best camp for that would be? Best weapons and armor and trainers for close combat. Any help. Also should I buy the cheap armor or just wait until I join a camp and buy the good stuff?

I think, it is possible to be good fighter in all camps and no camp is better than other.
I recommend OC, but is just my opinion.
You should wait for armors, they will give them to you and after that you will be able to buy "upgraded pieces".

Depending upon your play style - money is likely to be more than plentiful, so I would say buy armor now because it will help at low levels, then buy better when it is made available in game.

It does not matter which camp you join for melee. You will have access to the same skills and the same weapons and funtionally the same armor (same basic stats). Later in the game, you end up with the same armor and weapons no matter which camp you join.

There is a way to get your first armor for free... **spoiler Below**

Talk to a guy in the free mine..one of the scrapers with a name.....tell him you want to be a scraper, and he'll give you your new armor..it's either digger's trousers or light digger's trousers...one of the two. Saves you some ore early on though!

If you want to use 2 handed swords (better reach and more dmg) ONLY: you might want to join the New Camp. When you become a mercenary, Lee will teach you 2 handed sword, and you don't have to use up 30 skill points into 1 handed weapons. It's a save of skill pts.

I dislike 2 handed weapons because they're too slow for me. They're also a drag on skill points (30 to master 1h, 70 to master 2h)

My favorite strategy of play: (remember... this is all how and what you like!! Don't be afraid to experiment)
Skill points:
1h: 10+20=mastery.
To max strength: 85. (you start with 10, do Horatio quest, since his quest(+5str) doesn't count if you have more than 100 str)
So that's 115 skill points to do all you want with 1h melee. People finish the game at like... level...35? (average). That means you have 235 skill points left. (for magic). If everytime you do a quest, you pick a mana potion (bonus to maximum mana), you'll have a very powerful character with around 200 mana pool (with bonus to mana potions)
To get 6th magic circle you need 10+15+20+25+30+40=140 skill points... You have 95 skill points (235-140) you can invest into mana or like acrobatics.

For amulets or rings NEVER take +mana or +life. It's a waste. I suggest taking Damage against Weapons reduction. (Greater rings of Invincibility are great!). I've tried this several times... game becomes a piece of cake I'd think good for first timers.
