What does the yellow status bar mean?

During combat, when I choose a steel weapon, a yellow status bar will appear at the top of the other three. Whatever the bar means I can't quite figure out because it doesn't last long. Maybe 20 seconds or so and then it used up. I looked through the manual but didn't see. What's happening during this phase when the yellow status bar is on?

The only yellow staus bar I have during combat is the enemy hitpoint bar... . It wouldn't be in the manual because it came with the patch.

No patch, no status bar.

@Max- the bar will pop up in any combat situation for as long as your targeting focus is over something you can kill (if you're whacking a critter and look behind you for fun, the yellow bar will go away until you look at something you can kill again.

Oops, I forgot to mention that I installed the patch yesterday. I forgot all about the enemy health status "fix" that the patch incorporated into the game. Oh well, memory loss comes with age. Thanks.
