Newbie questions

- Are some of the items you can pick up but not put in your inventory useless? I know some have a use, but many seem not to.

- Interested in a hint, not a spoiler, what an artistic troll would like for his Birthday.

EDIT: I found a hint that maybe I don't need to get him a birthday present when I meet him, I can get one further in the game.

A bit frustrating as you try to go through every item you have seen!

- Interested in a hint, not a spoiler on uses for unique items you can pick up but not put in inventory, like cards, a goblin game, smithing tool.

- Last but not least, I wanted to play a magic user, and set mental to 16 other stats to 8 and lots of casting skills, but he just could not get past the goblin lord with the unsigned document. I had to restart finally (maybe with another 25 tries he could've killed him but...) Any ideas how to get a char like that to do ok until he gets some nice spells, or was restarting with a char with the points spread more better?

Hints

My first hint is be sure to install the patch. It's a must to play this game. Now for hints 1. You are right about the troll thing. Others in the game later will tell you what you need, and it's up to you to recognize it after that. 2. If you cannot put it in your inventory, you may need to carry it somewhere near to use it for some purpose. Some stuff is useless, but most has some purpose at some point or place in the game. Some of the stuff is just for show. Safest thing is leave it where you found it if you cannot put it in your inventory. If you do pick stuff up, don't throw anything away. Stuff you find and can carry is needed for game play or to sell to make money, or for majic uses. If you find you have too much stuff, use any barrel or chest you find to store it so you know just where it is. This is important. 3. No reason not to be mage, but start game as warrior to get strength up to 12 or 14. That way you can defend yourself until you find all the items needed for casting. You have to be able to fight no matter what with some parts of game. Stick to putting skill points into strenght, mental, and dexterity in that order of importance until strength is up to 14 and then dexteriy is up to 10. Then later in game build mental and constitution up to 10 and 8. After that if you want to be mage start upping the mental. As for lesser stats, common sense works here and you have lots more points to assign. Get strong enough to survive, then work on defense, then casting and object knowledge. Object knowledge is very important for many reasons. And get projectiles up to 30 to use special weapons later in game. No need to waste points in intuition, or ethereal. But put some in all the others. There are objects that strongly effect your stats, so try stuff on, even if you cannot identify it, and see what it does to you. One other hint, if you want to play without the walkthrough get the maps for some help. The PDF file is really great and is walkthrough, maps, stats, NPC's, and all items in Arx. The one bad part of this game is it has next to no ingame direction telling you what to do next or where to go. If you kill the wrong NPC, you can squash a side quest. The main story is locked, but you really need all the points you can get. Keep several save games on hand, and save before going into a new place. Then if you get screwed you don't have so far back to reload. I used the walkthrough as a backcheck. After I finished a section, I would check the walkthrough and see if I did what I was suppose to. The walkthrough is really more of a general guide, with few spoilers. It says where to go, but not how to do stuff in great detail. There are hundreds of secrets not in the walkthrough. Have fun and play as you like. We are here if you have any other questions. Hope this helped some. And yes I think starting over to get even spread of points at first is best idea. Edit: Boy did I talk too much!

You gain points with evey kill, and quest of course, and after getting to certain parts of the game. You can increase your skill levels by putting on the right armor, rings, helmets, ect. You can enchant stuff to make you bigger and better. Everyone finds different stuff at different times and places in the game. Just check you stats when you put stuff on and when you enchant stuff and see what changed.

It should go up a little with every NPC and rat you kill. You do not get points for some of the respawned creatures. It may be you are killing respawned rats at this stage. You did install the patch right? I may have asked already, so forgive me it I did. By the first visit to the Trolls I would say around three or four. The beginning of the game moves slow, so not many chances to level up right away. I would be surprized if you said you were over level four. If you are than you are doing fine.

I'm only level 2! I killed everything that attacked me. I was very upset when I killed the spider boss in the gem caverns as I got 20 exp. for him. BTW:Where can I get the patch?

That sounds right. I didn't pay much attention to exp. but I know levels came very far between at the first part of the game. You can get the patch here from the main Arx forum screen. Click on the "click here for more" under support files and follow the links. One of these days I'm going to learn how to put direct links into my posts. Hope this helps. Edit: I did it!!
