Why is RPG game realy so fun? And why are they so few? Anyway, i love RPG games, mostly becouse you get to creat your own character (in most of them) and that you can deside if you want to be good or evil, and how you will compleat the game (in most of them)... the best RPG games i have played must be Arcanum and of course Gothic.

They are like an interactive novel with pictures.
That's why it's so good.

This is like one of those tie breaker questions that you get.......
Answer in 20 words or less...
"I think RPG Games are so much fun because..."
Well 20 words won't do.
Done well, or averagely well, an RPG lets uou immerse yourself in a world that you know nothing about. As said, like a story with pictures (so thats a comic then !?).
You control and evolve your character that becomes an extension of yourself. The general good vs evil stuff prevails and you decide how your alter ego performs with respect to these traits.
To pull you in to the game a good RPG has to present you with a world that you can relate to, a story that grips you and you want to unravel and characters that you actually care about.
I find some games players don't actually like RPG's as they are too slow, require too much thought and vast amounts of time dedicated to them. They prefer a shooting type which they can pick up and put down after a 30 minute fix.
RPG's are a more sedate form of entertainment.
There are two distinct types of RPG for me. The 1st/3rd person type such as M&M9/Gothic or the isometric type such as the Baldurs Gate episodes.
I try not to compare the two formats as they are both distinct formats.
There are not many good RPG's around although I believe there are enough....I wouldn't have time to play them if we had games overload. Although, the future looks bright (no its not orange), with the pending releases.
I appreciate good grafix but to me, they are not the prime requisite.
So, why are RPG's so much fun??
It probably stems back to our childhood.

I don't know where to start. But I have to start somewhere, so I'll begin with the beginning.

The entertainment - the widest of the aspect to why RPG's are fun. The fascinations of another world, the creation of your pseudo-self, kicking righteous butt or crumbling kingdoms with the stab of a poison dagger.

The sheer possibilities are what make RPG's fun for me.

Then there's the story, the character development with other NPC's or the reason to the adventure. Background stories of every individual you meet, their grief or happiness.

RPG's can great an alternative plane of a world where Dragons roam and mighty wizards dwell in mystifying experiments. A plane you can explore and maybe conquer.

.....But sometimes I just go serious and pull out another game, where the main character is named Sam.

good rpgs are fun, because they answer these question:
what would happen, if i live in a different world/time ? what consequences have my good/evil actions ? can i be a hero ?

HiddenX, do you really think that RPGs answer question "can I be a hero?".

I do not think so .

I don't need to ask that question...I know I am a hero.

Yes, first time I saw you, I had one big idea in my mind: "this is hero".
I think we have only one same hero here - Max Killen

I prefer to be the GM in an RPG - I can be all the villains, and being in control of the world is fine with me, too !

When I'm a party member, I (or rather my character) usually am tightlipped and straightforward, though, so I don't think the people who have the dubious honor of being my GMs have much fun with me...

I play the uproariously jolly fat berserker type in pen and paper. I charge into battle with a heavy mace in one hand, a leg of chicken in the other, screaming 'What ho!'. Sometimes I brain things with the chicken leg.

RPGs are fun because you can do exactly this. Do whatever you want and have a good time.

CRPGs are fun because of the challenges of defeating the monsters, the level systems, etc. I don't often scream 'what ho!' when charging into a room at my computer screen.

Sometimes it is a fine line between RPGs and Adventure games. The King's Quest series was close to a RPG (closer than Diablo is). I like the idea of going off and doing my own thing. Betrayal at Antaria was closer to an adventure game than a RPG in the fact that it was very linear
