outside barrels
   

I just started wandering around the first two towns tying to get my feet wet. I think this is going to be an addiction for a long time. I do have one gripe: I like fairly early feedback as to consequences of my acts. I hate doing something that leads to a much later roadblock. Kind of like eating the meals in Ultima 5. No one complains when you do it but ooops you are no longer the avatar.
So my question is: is it expected that you will scrounge the stuff out of the outside barrels or is that stealing? I wouldn't do it except I am very short of money.
Also what could be causing my personality attribute to drop? I don't have a disease and I really haven't done anything yet.

re: personality I'm not sure, but that might be what's affecting personality
