how do you take pictures during gameplay? do you have to have a special program or what?

You can use the prt scr key and paste it into another program, or use one of the screenshot utilities like UO. You can get it here.

Other program, which you can use for editing too is IrfanView (freeware).
From Here it has lots of usefull options
