Dungeon Lords: GC Impressions @ Gamesweb (German)

Also on Gamesweb today is a first look at Heuristic's fantasy RPG 'Dungeon Lords'. The article is based on a visit to the company's booth at the Leipzig Games Convention this weekend. Again, if your German is a little rusty check it for the screens. This game doesn't look too shabby.

As a world premier, for the first time was the new RPG from D.W Bradley and Heuristic shown. Bradley was previously responsible for such titles as Wizardry and Wizards and warriors.

Dungeon Lords is a epic RPG that should be accessable for both Beginners and Profis, thanks to a lot of interesting features. The game offers a comprehensive and freely (I think) available world with cities, buildings, dungeons and areas with a zoomable third person perspective that is accessable through the mouse and keyboard. It will be available in the first half of next year. There is between 40 and 70 hours playtime without the side quests.

To accomadate begginers, the game trys to simplify certain things, without losing the things that attract gamers. The inventory is an example, whereupon objects will automatically be sorted by type and amount. The best objects will always be to of the list, so that they can be quickly accessed. With simple mouseclicks, the char can be easily fitted out. Trade will be easy to do. There is over 500 weapon types which will be shown on the on-screen char.

Sorry, my PCs acting up..

Also the char system offers a lot of specialities. Experts can manually use their experiance points, while beginners can choose a pre-set option, whereupon the optimal selection will be made, so that the danger of a bad char is small. There are 7 races, including men, elves and dwarfs, with different sub-catergorys for each. Naturally both sexes are included.

The fight system will also be simple, but offers enough for the expert. There is a combo system, that is not based off of keyboard combinations, but is automatically chosen. A tactical element is that the player can choose to attack certain bodyparts. Features such as Automap and Journal are planned, along with other things that would be revealed.

Dungeon Lords is primarily a single player game, lonely however will you not be. throughout the game you meet companions, who cannot be controlled by you, but who react independently. Anyone who would prefer human company can play on-line with perhaps 4, or even 7 other players. There is a co-operative mode in which the entire story can be played through, with options to save. The companions can be a help, as enemies can be tough, with a really cool cavetroll who is twice as big as the players char.

Also in the technical aspect is DL not to be sneezed at. The self developed engine can handle very detailed chars and enemys, with some beautiful animation. The textures are very sharp and detailed, and the lighting of the levels is also very well handled. The cities make a nice impression. \

Even in this early stage DL looks like a great surprise for RPGs. The diverse features make a good impression and should be good for both beginners and experts. If the game gets a good story, then they game will be one to watch for.

Dungeon Lords looks very interesting. If Bradley can deliver only half the mentioned features it will be a very nice game.
