Um sorry but they wont be able to prevent any one from pirating it , the only thing ppl can prevent ppl from playing is the multiplayer in games but most of the times they get by those , so uh just meaningless words.

Part of my point is that pirates are willing to download large files; that's exactly what they're doing.

IMO there will always be cracks and piracy.. I myself sometimes use a no-cd crack for games i play frequently so i dont have to insert the CD everytime i want to fire up a game.
But I dont think you can remove the protection because somehow I think there is people who don't know about the cracks and they just try to copy games from their friends and when they don't work they buy the game instead.
After viewing the piracy-report it strikes me that in poor countries the rate is a lot higher. This giving the most common excuse "I cant afford buying a retail copy" a little more sense..
Anyway.. I think sierra made the best solution with half-life..And they also made the best solution for a online-game in my opinion. A cd-key that checks with a server when you go online.
Of course this would mean that they had to implement a online multiplayer function but then again most games today have it and it makes them more replayable and attractive to buy.
You can still crack them but in order to get everything out of the game you would have to buy it to get your personal key.
I think if there was a MMORPG that worked the same way as half-life and CS did I wouldn't hesitate a moment to go out and buy it..
As it is now I don't play MMORPG because of the monthly payment method. This would make me feel like i have to play to get my money worth and you dont always have time to do that.
If they put a higher price on games and let them be free to play online I think that would sell A LOT!

Fine Gorath, you can look here then. While you're at it you can see the statistics for the piracy of movies, music, and books as well as the piracy of business and entertainment software. The entertainment software (i.e. games) piracy levels tend to be equal to or up to ~40% higher than business piracy in some cases.

It might sound lame, but the best weapon against piracy is honesty and education. It's hard to explain how bad stealing software is, unless you've been a programmer and been on the other side of the fence. Fortunately, there are those who can, and those who have a conscience.

Piracy is huge in Russia and China not because they have broadband and will download huge games hours on end. It's because the average person earns less than USD1000 a year. They can't afford a USD30 game so they go for the cheaper USD2 copy sold by pirate vendors, who get their stock from pirates who make copies in the hundreds of thousands. This is where the business of piracy is. The peasants are happy, the vendors are happy and the kingpins are certainly making good money from someone else's effort. Very often, you'll find the people who cracked the games are quite different from the people to SELL the game. Nevertheless, they are both illegal and are connected, like it or not.

Well, I guess you can say that if the Russians and Chinese can't afford it, they shouldn't play it. That's where some authorities disagree. Games are not business software and users have no way of reaping a profit from its use, so having to pay half their monthly incomes for a game they shouldn't be denied because they are poor is absolutely daylight robbery. And law enforcers aren't exactly the most highly paid. So they too rely on steady supplies of pirated material for their regular entertainment and leisure. Not to mention extra income in turning a blind eye.

But pirates don't only exist in poor countries. Many wealthy countries, in fact wealthy people partake in it. In these places it's more an attitude or statement, rather than affordability.

Well, in a perfect world, people are honest, people earn what they deserve, and there are no wars.

Germany pirate market strong? Bah...

Im a swede. Here we might buy a game for christmas... Or when it is something really, really special... And we are proud over our originals.
At least three of the most powerful international pirate groups have their hq in sweden.

All attempts to reduce the piracy market have failed...
Here, the Broadband industry are entirely built upon the pirate industry, nearly everybody younger than 30 have at least 512kbit dsl here...

In sweden, most people have at least basic knowledge in the microsoft office package, most people have used Photoshop. People dont even know the name of the available free tools.

And if you wanna know, I do own the Gothic Original. And im proud over it.

Best Regards

Who said that the German pirate market is strong? All I said is that many, if not most, of the tools used all over the world to copy CDs, rip movies, watch pay-tv, etc. are developed in the German market. Only two mainstream examples: CloneCD and CDRWin.

The idealism some people here show in support of their 'no copy protection' position is completely irrelevant, IMO.
Licensing a copy protection costs money. Publishers only invest that money because experience tought them that they earn more money selling additional boxes than they have to spend on the license.

If it can be copied it will be copied!

An investment of a few thousand dollars to cut out 90% of the possible pirates is an excellent investment from a publisherīs point of view. A few compatibility issues are acceptable.
Donīt forget the developer and publisher have to pay their bills. JoWooD has to pay almost 300 employees.

If you are serving the mass market - a necessity for a AAA title with a 7digit budget - the money isnīt made with the so called 'hardcore gamer'. Grandma who wants to buy her grandson a game for christmas, or relatively uninformed gamers who buy one game per month are the real money makers because they are legion.
(Exceptions are titles like WC3.)

Copy protection is unavoidable because many people do not want to accept that making or distributing illegal copies is a crime! Stop making copies and their is no longer a reason to protect the software.

But, but... *Runs away crying*

No, we have much pirating in our country, swedes had things to do with Ai-qaida, we mostly suported the Nazi-German and obviously alot of people know what Swedish porn is when you play online.

I just took a few examples there.

LOL! swedish porn...i hear 7 yr olds watch it there (with the family )
But seriously, gaming piracy in western countries is just silly and greedy, i can understand people in poorer countries getting involved, and poorer guys in the western countries wanting pirate copies of MS office...but scrounging off small guys like pirhana btyes, for something that is probably just 1 days salary for alot of people, THATS just ridiculous!
