excuse me for my ignorance, but i'm a complete newbie in the game and have hardly gotten into the first chapter. it seems though, that the whole world has a limited resource of ore. looking at some of your posts, you guys seem to have tons of ore! (ar least compared to me, 2500 is a lot). how did you guys get this much? does mining help? i tried mining but the guy just keeps on picking the ore nugget and not getting any ore back...
another thing, i've found a trainer in the swamp camp that will teach me some magic, but when i trade with him, he only has the fist of air spell. where the heck are all the other brotherhood spells? if he's the magic trainer, i'd expect him to have a lot more brotherhood runes for sale...
another thing: i can't train in any circle of magic! when i talk to the magic trainer in the camp, he only gives me the options of trading with him and improving my mana. i have 30 skill points and i don't know what's wrong...
here are my conditions:
i have NOT become a member of the swamp camp
i've only impressed two gurus (the magic master and the other guy that wanted dusty as a recruit)
help would be GREATLY appreciated! |

First of all, live. Adventure. Level up and join a camp... you'll be able to become a mage only after you have joined.
Swamp Camp is not the best camp for mages, though. You get magic very early, but you cannot advance too far into magic circles. Joining the New Camp will give you the option to become a mage only very late into the game, so if you want to become a good mage, you ought to join the Old Camp. And yes, it's possible to beat the game as a mage .
=EDIT= I became rich by learning the lockpick skill from Fingers. It only makes you break less skeleon keys, but rummaging through people's 'treasure' chests will help in becoming rich. You might also learn to skin (and pull teeth, claws etc. from) animals from one of the hunters, you can sell those skins at shops.

1. You can make swords. Talk to Hugo in the Old Camp about doing that.
2. Beat people up.
3. Get trained to remove furs, skin and teeth, then sell them for ore.
4. Explore and you will find ore all over the place.
5. Do quests, some people will pay you for your efforts.
You can get all of the spells in the game.

Right, the magic dealers will sell you their spells regardless of camp.

alright, i'll go looking for ore and such.. and maybe the old camp isn't such a bad idea, seeing as how my mind is set on being a spell-caster.
however, i'm still wondering why i'm unable to learn the circles of magic skill... do i need to be a certain level before i can learn the first circles?
i downloaded on of the quickstarts just to see what it was like. the quickstart character was lvl 6 with tons of ore and he had not yet joined ANY of the camps. however, when i came up to one of the baals in the swamp camp, the teacher offered to teach me some circles of magic and the character wasn't a member of the camp... so that leads me to thinking that it is possible to learn circles of magic without being a member of any camp... could someone help me on this? i'd like to use "gust of wind" to help me kill stuff and earn exp (as well as ore!) but i can't because i need to somehow learn the second circle of magic... i need help...

Usually you are supposed to join a camp and then earn the right to learn magic by completing a major quest in the 2nd chapter of the game. You can use the character helper to learn skills, but that is cheating and will ruin your gaming experience. Just learn some one-handed fighting skills, complete quests in all the camps for exp., then join a camp and follow the story. You'll get there.

I'm with Val on this, I don't know anything about the quickstart, but I'm pretty sure you need a mage guild affiliation before you can learn circles anywhere but the brotherhood.
The game has a pretty linear progress model, being taught circles without taking your oaths seems like it would go against that.
I joined the OC too, as compromise between getting magic early and being able to reach the highest circles. |

You can also nockout some merchants and other NPC's with your sword and still there stuff. if you use your bow it will kill them outright.
I did this to Wolf the mechant in the old camp in chapter 4 and got over 5000 ore.
Also some NPC's dont kill you when you fight them, a great example is Scar, the guy Near Gomez. attack him and he will about kill you, wait then when you get back up heal yourself and hit scar again, keep doing this until hes dead. Then loot the best sword and bow you will ever need.

And since nobody likes Scar, noone will intervene, not even his colleague Arto.

You can also go to the new camp and use this tactic on lee, lares, torlof(at night), orik and silas. |

Hi Jaz, I would beg to differ with you about no body caring about you beating up Scar.
Once I was in Thorus's room, Scar and Arto sleep there too. Well I went up to Scar in his room and gave him a good wack and all three of these guys jumped on me and showed me that this wasn't a good idea
