First face the object until it's has been highlighted, then hold action key (default is ctrl or left mouse button) and press up.

Do you go right? Or do you go left? A simple decision, yes? No ambiguities. Only the dream of the path not taken! And so one might stand in this place and contemplate for a long while. What will I miss if I go left? What will I lose if I go right? And in my indecision, have I chosen a worse fate?

You should download the FAQ from GothicDot if you have problems with the controls.

As far as I know you can't pick up items. I had the hardest time beating the game without this knowledge.....thank you Slasher of Moon!
