Questions about Alchemy, please help!

I have an Argonian with a minor skill of Alchemy, but I have no idea how to raise it. From what I've ascertained from the manual, I'm supposed to eat things to learn their properties? I've eaten a bunch of stuff and some of them I do get effects, but most of the time I'm told it has no effect at all. And I've yet to see my Alchemy skill actually rise. Maybe I raise it by making the potions themselves? But why make potions when I don't even know what their effects will be?

Also, should I conserve my ingredients? I know the game is huge, but I don't know if I should save some of the stuff I pick up just in case I'll need it for later potions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Alchemy

I have alchemy as a minor skill also and making potions is fun and helpful, and you should definately make them. It increases your alchemy skill when you make potions (I don't think it matters if you fail or succeed, but not sure) and the higher your alchemy skill is the more effects from ingredients are revealed, which leads to making better potions. I'm guessing that later on I'll be able to make really potent potions that will be very helpful, but right now I suck at it and I usually fail when I try to combine ingredients. When I do succeed my potions are of so poor quality that using them wouldn't really help at all, so I sell them, which helps me increase my mercantile skill.

Yes, you must make potions to become better at them. Also, you'll need all 4 of the potion making items to make very powerful potions.
