i don't want to come across as a harbinger of doom, but my prediction is that as sales of complex single-player CRPGs continue to decline, development studios in more wealthy countries (USA, Canada, Britain, Germany) will transfer resources to MMORPG production. as a result, small startups in countries with no real gaming industries (ex-Soviet bloc) will attempt to fill the void. it remains to be seen whether their work will be picked up by the small cadre of dedicated, old-school solo CRPG fans, mostly concentrated in privileged western countries. err, ok, so this isn't really much of a PREDICTION since this is already happening, but you get the point.

the product cycle for computer games has shrunk so much, developers and studios will continue to cut as many corners as they can to reduce time to market. expect more buggy, half-finished games coded non-efficiently so as to require a faster CPU!

the solution? outsource game development to India!

What about all those great games that are coming Q1 2050?

Single player CRPG? STALKER oblivion lost is coming out soon, though it's an action RPG hybrid. But it's open ended gameplay sounds interesting enough.

When the MMORPG market gets too saturated, I think they'll shift back to single player and non-persistant multiplayer CRPGs. Already we see the trend of major publishers ditching the MMORPG business. Microsoft already cancelled Mythica, EA scaled back it's UO2 to UXO which is more single/multi hybrid and Ubisoft dropped the Matrix online publishing deal.

Oh, and another - Vagrant Story on Playstation (yup, PS1). It's incredibly in-depth and has a an engrossing story. It's really not the dumbed-down RPG experience you'd expect from a console - although it lacks any deep non-combat activity* and is relatively light on customisable character development, it is incredibly detailed and rewards the intelligent tactical player who pays attention to the character's/weapons' abilities .

* exception: you get to build/customise your weapons. For example, you can swap blades and hilts, mount gems on weapons/shields/armour (bestowing magical properties) and eventually you can melt down & re-make blades, even mixing different metals for new effects. This is really the only non-combat element of note, but the depth here is mind-boggling.

I know you, Roqua, wanted a turn-based game of incredibly deep combat management, and although it may seem like a strange choice, this could be it. If you don't have a PS and don't want one, it'd probably run on an emulator.

I played Vagrant Story (or Vagrant Hear, I forget which) on PS. I also tried Gladius at some store while my wife was buying some girl crap. You really are on a mission to find a game for me, huh? The turn-based market is pretty small so I have probably played it. But I also refuse to get a console. My religion believes that consoles are for women and child molestors. I would hate to go against God or be thought of as a women or a pedaphile.

But I do thank you for putting the effort in to finding a game I'd like, it is appreciated. One day a will find a game that you like for you maybe.

@Wolfgarou- I too greatly anticipate S.T.A.L.K.E.R., though I'm curious as to how much of an RPG it will be. I guess I can only wait and see.
