It was a strangely unsatisfying end to a challenging game. It didn't feel epic to me, and the Dark Savant's voice carried like a petulant child. If all it took to get rid of him was to write him out of existence, why didn't the existing Cosmic Lords (before me) just do that if they felt threatened? It was certainly within their power, as the Cosmic Forge is the uber-tool that allows anything; nobody who controls the Forge should ever fear anything... it make no sense-y-poo...
Also, the Dark Savant was one of the easiest "boss" battles in the game. He went down in 5 rounds to my level 21-23 characters, and didn't even injure one of my guys to below 50% HP. The boss battles outside the shrines at Ascension Peak were much tougher than this guy.
If you choose the evil route, the boss battle against Bela was laughably easy... My monk (RFS-81) instant killed him in the first round
Strangely enough, the ending that has you joining the Dark Savant had a more satisfying presentation than the other two...
Oh well, maybe I'm expecting too much out of a game that is primarily combat.

Heh! I've never liked intros or endings to any RPG i've played. The story has never been the point for me, i guess, so i've always thought those bits were silly; like we need to justify our lust for splattage... |

Heh, yeah, the endings to a lot of CRPGs do leave a lot to be desired (Gothic comes to mind from recent games). It's a bit ironic that console games (esp. Squaresoft games) have much longer and more meaty endings (I guess you do spend half the game watching animated movies, they might as well end with a nice long one )...
Oh yeah, one more question about Wiz 8: Z'ant and Yamir said they would meet me on Ascension Peak to confront the Savant... They never showed up, despite my successful completion of the Alliance quest... Is that a bug, or were they just blowing smoke?
And yet one more question; where are all these uber-weapons I've heard about, like Light Sword, Murasama, Bushido Blade, etc.? My best weapons were Fang, Dread Spear, Eagle Eye Bow, Blunderbuss, Hunter's Bow, Giant Sword, Zaitochi Staff, Staff of Doom, and Flame Staff. Probably a whole lot of improvement to be had, huh? I thought I searched everywhere in the game, though I didn't figure out what was up with the runes (not that I tried all that hard). I remember trying to touch every rune I came across (6 in cemetary, and 6 in Mountain Wilderness), but nothing happened...

I think it's the general consensis that Yamir and Z'Ant were killed off before they could meet up with you.
Many of the weapons are randomly generated when you first enter an area. So, sometimes you'll find the item and sometimes you won't.
Those runes lead to special Easter Egg dungeons. They require you touching the runes and using an item to gain access. For example, the Mountain Wilderness one required a longsword as the "key" I guess you could say. Search this forum, I'm sure I posted the full explaination somewhere around here. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

Oh wow... There are two rune dungeons? Was there anything in the game that could have let one figure out how to solve them (how does one come up with "long sword" just randomly )?
I guess I'll look around a bit then, thanks

Actually, there were three I think. There were no actual hints that I know of. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

When the game was first released, one of the designers was questioned relentlessly about the three sets of runes. He flat-out refused to say anything more than they lead to a little surprise. If you do the runes at night, the "keyhole" glows some and says "a specific item is required here". A couple people used a trainer to give themselves every single item in the game and then tried them, one by one, until the correct keys were found. Once that was broken open, it was another 2 weeks before maps of the egg dungeons started popping up. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

I will return to topic of this thread:
End of Wiz8 had + and -
greatest + was that there were choices
greatest - was that Dark Savant was too weak
Few RPGs have good end. Best part of every RPG I played was begining:
- character creation
- early parts of game when leveling is quick and you make basic decission that you will (usually) later in game just follow. |

@Dani - Great to see you here again. Hope you'll be able to stay around for a while.
You can have a tougher "evil" ending. Take certain NPCs with you (Vi definitely, maybe others) and they will abandon your party and fight with Bela against you. When I played out this scenario, I had Vi with me but no other NPCs, and Vi had virtually every priest spell including the high level death spells. She died in the end (along with every other opponent I ever fought in the endgame; I never lost this battle), but she was not a pushover since I had been using her in my party regularly. _________________ The world itself shifts and changes and fades to mist like the strings of a minstrel's harp, and mayhap the dreams we forge are more enduring than the works of kings and gods.-Robert E. I know you're off soldiering, but we miss you here. At least come back as often as you can. _________________ The world itself shifts and changes and fades to mist like the strings of a minstrel's harp, and mayhap the dreams we forge are more enduring than the works of kings and gods.-Robert E.
