It only says that PB is neither working on a 2nd add-on nor do they have the intention to change this. And that G3 is in the works and will be relesed 2005.

In early 2002 PBīs mother company Phenomedia went bankrupt. They survived but several developers closed. PB bought out the Gothic IP, but of course they needed funding to survive until the G2 came out. JoWooD helped them out in exchange for the publishing rights.
So PB alone owns the brand, I think. Even the official Atari G2 page has a copyright notice. Another hint in this direction.
JoWooD paid the development of everything with the G2 name on it. They have the worldwide publishing and distribution rights. Late 2002 they were also almost bankrupt. They closed all international subsidiaries and stoped all publishing efforts outside the German markets. Since then they sell licenses to other territories to local publishers. Atari was their choice for G2.

The voice recordings for the add-on were done last September by Piranha Bytes in a studio in London.

If the English voice recording were done for the add-on, do you think an English version of the add-on could exist even though nothing of its existence has been officially announced?

It's sort of Jowood's style to publish non-German versions of Topselling games about a year after the german release. Just look at games like Aquanox. It's was clear all along that Jowood would publish Aquanox but still it took about a year before it was shipped. It happened that way with both AN1 and 2, so I think that will be the same for gothic 2 NotR.

i just don't get it..why do they keep making different versions, when you could make one version with multiple language options..

Um... many reasons. First of all, in the case of Gothic it would mean you'd have to ship it on more CDs since the recorded voices take up quite an amount of space. And you'd have to provide that for multiple languages. And since publishers want to save every cent they certainly will not ship a game on more CDs than actually necessary.

Also, the translation is not always handled by the same company. And also depends on other factors. It happens quite often that a game gets published in country XYZ while there's no publishing deal for other regions yet. For multiple language versions (in this case) that means that the company wouldn't be able to release the game until they know when and how it will be published in the other regions. No thanks.

Because this is not going to sell to Joe Average (aka mass market).

Yes, but is it selling now? I'm sure Joe Average doesn't like an old game, what the addon will be for him.
