I am a number of years out of date when it comes to paper RPGs, and outside of 3rd edition, the latest RPG I picked up was a GURPS add on about 10 years ago. What do people play, what kind of RPG is it, and about when was it published?
For me, my favorites are:
1. Space Opera, SciFi, late 70s
2. Dragon Quest, Fantasy, late 70s
3. GURPS, Fantasy – tho heavily modified by players and GM, Dunno the date. |

I like to play the old West End Games Star Wars, Traveller (all four editions with a focus on Ed. 3), and of the newers ones Fading Suns and perhaps Mutant Chronicles... a seasoned Space Opera genre referee here  .

The closest I've ever been to playing a pen and paper game is the RP forum here on RPGDOT (at least there's a live DM). So for me it's the OC thread ala Airk and Val!

My 'top' RPG list:
1. 3rd Edition D&D Hands down. Exactly what the game needed.
2. Shadowrun - Science Fantasy. I love the setting.
3. Star Wars - West End Game. Simple. Fun. Realistic.
4. Champions - Super Hero goodness!
5. Rifts - Great Sci-Fan setting. Too bad the Palladium tried and true 'each book is more powerful than the last' method wrecked it.
6. Cyberpunk 2020 - Another sci-fi setting. Shadowrun is better though, unless you don't like the magical aspect of the setting.
7. White Wolf - Mage, Werewolf, Changeling, Vampire, Wraith in that order.
8. AD&D Second Edition
Beyond that... let's see... Toon, Call of Cthulu, Heroes Unlimited, Marvel Superheroes, MechWarrior/BattleTech, Paranoia, Middle Earth Roleplaying... uh... couple of more that I can't recall...

Traveller? Wow, I havn't picked that up in ages...Didn't it get released in big book form? I still have over a dozen of those little black books complete with contradictory rules and all.
What did you think of Space Opera by FGUI? |

Well, Traveller in big book form? It was my first SF ROG, Taveller, and I have a shelf full of TRaveller stuff - T1 to T4.
The small A5 books were 1st Edition. After that came the big A4 things or rather, the second edition called MegaTraveller which - history-wise - covered the Imperial civil war. Then came the third edition, Traveller: The New Era. This was set after the civil war created Virus and Virus ruined civilization. Then GDW went bankrupt and Marc Miller - yes, the original creator of Traveller - revived the game via his new company Imperial Games. This 'new' Traveller was glossy and quite a looker but it was, system-wise, a step back... down to the basics again. History-wise it covered the first years of the Imperium so it was set in the far past! They planned on bringing out history books from that era over all the Traveller eras right to the end of the universe, but the 4th Ed. never became poular (what wonder, it was no competition for contemporary systems, TNE had been much better, and the Traveller First Ed. had been charming with all its errors but T4 wasn't charming).
That was the end of Traveller as we know it.
I never GMed the FGUI Space Opera so I can't tell...

Hmm. Well, here goes (although this is limited, of course, to games I've played, so AD&D 3d Ed. is right out).
1. AD&D (specifically Forgotten Realms).
2. Shadowrun
3. World of Darkness- Vampire and Werewolf
4. Amber
5. Rifts (and the horrible Palladium system).
6. Champions
7. Original Star Wars RPG (non-d20 system).
8. Palladium Fantasy RPG
9. Battletech/Mechwarrior
I'd like to include Fading Suns, but unfortunately I never was able to get a game together. But it's one of my favorite worlds.

ive really only played AD&D... but i must admit thats pretty fun. Would the Battletech series be counted as one?

well that goes without saying, the roleplaying forums are cool beans! and its so great because you can focus on the story, and just STARt with your favorite character, and later the dm will allow you to do cooler stuff, and theres no tables and stuff to worry about, and the story is moved by YOU and 5 other peoples!! yaa.... problem is just getting everyone on at the same time... but thats like getting all your friends for d&d on saturday....
