M&M 9 : Question about NPCs joining the party

How do I drop the first NPC that joined my party at the beginning of M&M 9? I hit '5' to talk to him but I have no option to drop him from the party.

There should be a dialogue option allowing you to drop him. Have you left the first island yet?

Yes, I've already visited a few towns and dungeons.

He only answers questions and I also have an option to say Goodbye, which is for ending dialog.

I haven't invited anyone else into the group yet.

I have not played in quite some time, but at risk of spoiling things, I don't believe you can dismiss him.

'Nuff said!

I finished the game now.

You can only control 2 of the 3 npc slots. The other one is controlled by the game for quests.
