Dang it, game prices keep going up! A game released in 2005 cost me $50.00, and now a game released in 2006 is going to cost me $1550.00? Guess I'd better install TurboTax...

Oblivion minimum requirements |
|
Read the official site more carefully. It clearly says that these are RECOMMENDED requirements; the MINIMAL requirements are
# Windows XP
# 512MB System RAM
# 2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
# 128MB Direct3D compatible video card
# and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver
Bad on you and Voodoo Extreme for not checking your facts. |

The worst part was, I clicked and then realized I'd typed in the recommended and didn't even get a chance to correct it before I had my keester handed to me on a platter. |

You've gotta hand it to our visitors though, Kalia. At least they often provide some useful information with their vitriol.

Those requirements aren't too bad. I've got a P4 3Ghz/2Gb/6600GT. The video is a little light but should get me by. _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |

Funny thing is that what they have listed as the 'minimal requirements'
won't even run Morrowind smoothly with all the options turned up. |

That's exactly right. I cannot remember a 3D game where the 'minimal requirements' resulted in an acceptable gameplay experience. When a software company lists 'recommended specifications' they're really saying, "Our marketing team required that we publish specs that would get as many people to buy our game as possible without triggering a class action suit. If you actually want to enjoy our product, you'd better have the following..." _________________ For each toon kills the mob he 'groes, yet each toon does not die. |

one of the problems with Morrowind was people overclocking to the minimum requirements (I think it was 800mhz) then flooding the Elder Scrolls boards with complaints of it crashing when they overheated.
I will say the worst recommended requirements were for Ultima 9 when even when they sent out the third patch still weren't good enough to make it run smoothly.
I remember a short trend of people who loaded up the game after a few years to see if they could it to run smooth. (for some reason a simple thing like a defrag would corrupt the files and I would have to reinstall the game).
I'm concerned about this video card requirement for Oblivion: it doesn't look my TI 4400 will work with it. |

No, it won't. kathode clarified 6600's and said the GF4's don't have the required shader support:
quote:
6800 series, 6x00 series, you say tomato... yada yada Smile
And yeah, GF4 doesn't support the shaders we need. Evolve or die (i've got one at home myself
He also said their specs are realistic:
quote:
They [minimum specs] aren't ever "nailed down" six months before release. They are guessed at, released, and then at the end of the dev cycle it becomes apparent that the min specs are simply the minimum required to render a frame, hardly to run the game in a playable state. Sorry, I don't want to just blindly throw darts at a wall that's six months or more away. We are attempting to actually provide realistic specs that can run the game at a playable framerate with minimal bells and whistles. The min spec machine is right behind my desk with its guts splayed open for all to see and fiddle with.
Everyone's prerogative whether they believe him or not. _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |

That's utter BS. I've got a 1.8 AMD, 1GB RAM and a GF 5900XT and with everything tweaked to the maximum, Morrowind *did* run smoothly @ 1024*768.
However, I get the feeling that Oblivion won't even budge. Gotta get some serious cash real soon... _________________ Don't work too much; it could interfere with your drinking. |
