There's lots of XP to get in the NW, if you explore everywhere, kill all monsters and do all quests. You can also do most of the Merc quests before joining a guild (not sure about afterwards). There's also a lot of XP to be had beating up the Merc's. I know I didn't go to the Old World until I was Lvl 17 or 18.
Did you go see Daron daily for 20 days and donate $50 each day ($1,000 total)? You get quite a few extra HP's by doing that, which can save your bacon later. I know I often came within 20 HP's of dying during the early chapters and without those extra HP's from Daron, I'd have been toast!
Did you pray at the shrines for extra strength? At 52% 1H, you'll be getting the strength bonus about every second hit, so the higher your STR, the better. Do you have the best weapons you could at this point in the game?
You should definately get the Heavy Militia armor mentined in Jabberwhacky's earlier post. It'll help a lot!
All in all, I was able to kill just about everything in the VOM in the second chapter.
Personally, I wouldn't waste any XP on forging. If you're going to be a Paladin, you won't need the skill, because you'll buy the best "Paladin" sword in the game later and improve it yourself, (without the forging skill). Put the XP into Strength, 1H, or Crossbow/Bow skill. Or, if you can stand spending 35 XP's, learn Alchemy, the health potions and the permanent boosting potions. You don't have to learn the Mana Potions to learn the permanent potions for boosting STR, DEX or HP's.
Once you can take out Skelleton's, there's unlimited XP to be had in the NW, if you have the patience for it (see other posts about the Skelleton Mage / Unlimited XP cheat). There's a cave way in back of Dexter's tower and a Tomb near Onar's Farm where you can use it. (I left one Skelleton Mage alive in each and went back a couple of times over the course of the game, gaining about 5 or 6 levels total)!
If none of this stuff works and you really, really, really think you need more STR, DEX, HP's or MANA, look for a thread about the biggest game exploit. There's some stuff in there that you might find useful.

wel, in ch2 there are 2 very easy ways to leave the VoM,
#1: if you have the teleport rune to go the the VoM pass, (at the beginning) use that.
#2: when you run of the orc ram, go to the forest en walk to the river, go trough the river to the path that goes up and then leave the VoM.
i did it without being hit or chased (exept for the beginning) _________________ Always wondering how it would be... |

wel... id depends wich mines do you have to check now? did you already did 2 or non?
if you did non of them you don't need the speed potion!
just run forward and just before the cliff go right.
go past the snappers and go right again.
after a while you will see a bunch of wolfs, kill them. there is also a body with some money and other stuff.
then just follow the path to the left or right (in both ways you'll one of the 2 mines.
with the 3th mine i didn't use the speed potion, but it may be handy... they almost hit me back there...
and some funny thing, when you reach the 3th mine, you'll see a knight fighting with a bloodfly, and he can't hit it, becuase the bloodfly is to fast! _________________ Always wondering how it would be... |

Well I think by now you'll have access to Monastery, and the dude in the basement will brew you some if you have the right ingredients (Lab flask, meadow knotweed and some other plant...maybe snapperweed).
Check out the potion vendor in merchant square. If you're standing next to Sarah / Canthar, look ahead and he'll be to your right.
.............................Potion
.............................Vendor
...................................................Sarah or
....................................................Canthar
.......Jora
.....................................City Gate
How do I get to space stuff out without using puncuation? What I mean is that when I used spaces where all those periods are I just got a left-aligned list of "Potion vendor, sarah etc" and it completely ignored the spaces. |

to get lots o XP and kill a lot of orcs just get in the castle and shoot down the orcs from the wall. make sure u have a lot of arrows/bolts cause itll probably be hard to hit them from there unless u have a lot of dexterity. hope this helps |

Don't think this has been mentioned, but a handy exploit is how the orcs stop at the base of the log that leads up to the castle. You can pull a large number there, you just gotta make sure they're headed straight for the log and that'll make em stop, making perfect targets for your sword/bow/spell. |
