Saved game after I died by mistake--is all lost???

Yes, Yes, after I was killed, I went to load my save game, but instead saved my exsiting game, now evertime I try to resume my game, I am dead.

Do I have to start all over?

No. Enter marvin-mode, then enter god-mode, then hit F8.

In other words, when you load the game with your dead character, press c to get to the character screen, type MARVIN then press c to leave the screen. Then press F8. You'll be ready to save the world once more.

Gothic. Save often, save in different slots.

Don't feel stupid, I did the same thing once. Then I took a break from Gothic for about a month before my anger subsided.
