The Future of Gaming According To EA
   

While this deals more with console games, rather than PC's, it's still an interesting and in some ways worrying article out of BBC News in the UK dealing with where EA, one of the largest game developers in the world, sees gaming going in the future!! Ugh... EA, the M$ of the gaming industry. Heck, I haven't touched an EA game for a long time, except for the occasionally spin in their F1 games.

*laughs* hahaha...madgamer, thats a good one...

other question: why is ea still here? instead akklaim has to file for bankruptcy...

as much as most people here do hate ea, they must be doing something right which other publishers don't...maybe our RPG niche is not as large as we thought and ea games, as silly and blownup they may be are indeed the only ganes to sell these days?

Nobody doubts the EA business model. Sell Vanilla. Sell it a lot. Keep selling it. There are plenty of casual gamers who love vanilla.

The problem is when EA bought up other game companies, only to push out a few crap games, and then fold them when they failed to make as much as vanilla. This has led to many great franchises to be eliminated, or pathetic shells pumping out only Vanilla instead of an original flavor. For instance, the great sim franchise now only keeps making the Sims sequels and SimCity remakes. There is no innovation or originallity. Wanna bet the Sims 2 will be the Sims with better graphics. And this is one of the successful franchises.

EA's predictions bode poorly for serious gamers. If the price of development rises so high on consoles that it prices out smaller firms, you'd either better get used to even more vanilla from the largest franchises. The cost of risks become too high.

Maybe the PC will be better positioned in the future if this prediction comes true. Yet, dev costs are very high on the PC and sales figures are pretty glum. I think getting capital for a resurggence of PC Games will be difficult, so it may be a while before it happens. Who wants to invest money on a platform with such poor sales.

Remember, everyone loves vanilla. Even if you happen to like rum raisin.

We'll have to see. I think there are enough rum rasin lovers out there to provide a pretty large demographic and profitability for the small developer/publisher willing to make rum rasin while the EAs of the world crank out more and more vanilla.

Also, I'm not so sure that it's an absolute requirement to need incredibly huge budgets to develop PC games for the rum rasin lovers of the world. For example, ask pretty much anyone who frequents RpgDot how important flashy graphics and sound are and you'll find that they aren't at the top of the list.

There's a reason why there are many past gems that people still play today that by comparision to today's graphics and sound are quite primitive. Rum rasin lovers around the world know that, while eye candy is nice, it's the gameplay that makes the game... hopefully small developers/publishers will fill the vacuum left by the vanilla-making EAs and be able to make a lucrative living making rum rasin.
