I am not a caster so I need magicka help |

Okay I am a modified night blade to be more of a stealth specialty then magic. I pretty much am playing a theif but put Ilusion and Mysticism for minor skills with stealth as my specialty. I am looking at my magicka and it only seems to go up with my intelligence which is only at like 68. This is really pissing me off because I can't seem to cast any spells because my magicka is so freakin low. How are you casters out there getting more magicka...I thought magicka would go up with level but it stays the same til I put a point or two into itelligence. I am thinking that I am screwed..is this true? |

Screwed or not you'll have to decide. Mana is indeed based on INT, and your 68 is actually pretty good. The only trick we caster-types are using is picking helpful birthsigns. Astronach is the most obvious as it triples your mana... |

But there ARE painful ways to play the game... and playing a magic dependant character with 68 magicka qualifies.
SPells and potions can boost your intellegence or magicka pools directly. Those would help out a lot for you. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

I already made this toon, so changing my birthsign is no use to me...but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong. So all you guys out there have bad magicka too and pretty much have to depend on potions to get anywhere...that really sucks.
I never really appreciated magic so why start now

So being a pure mage must be pretty hard to do then. I noticed alot of mages playing the heavy armor big weapn sort...I know why now |

I think it wouldn't be impossible to do a pure mage, no swords or heavy armor. Annoying at times, perhaps... you'd have to have a series of scrolls and teleport spells ready at all times for when sleeping wasn't an option. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

I had the same problem: not having played a TES game before, I created a mage/thief with 50 Magicka, assuming that it went up tremendously each level. Oops.
I eventually decided I really wanted a straight mage character, so I made a new Breton mage character with the Atronach sign. 210 starting Magicka makes all the difference. But yes, mage characters seem to have a much harder time. I hear that the opposite was true in TES2, so I guess they swung the balance toward the fighters this time. |

well, there IS a way to boost magicka with leveling: if you concentrate on skills that use intelligence, you get multipliers when you level up - so a point spent on INT whilst leveling can be worth 1-5 points of mana. You will be capped at 100, though (although there are magical items that can raise your INT above that).
The second way would be to become a powerful enchanter and enchant everything on you with a permanent INT+10 effect. I think there are 18 wearable items, from shoues to amulets, so you could add a +180 to the 100 INT, and thus have a mana pool of 280 _________________ Rendelius

Basically unless you pick certain races (breton, high elf) or certain signs (astronaut, mage, apprentice) you will not have enough magicka to cast the most potent spells in the game. You still will have enough to cast a lot of fireballs and stuff, just not the BIG BIG spells. Enchanted items, potions and scrolls can take a lot of weight off your magicka pool though, and all races and signs have access to that stuff. I have a Breton character born under the Mage, so I have the 2x magicka multiplier, but I also have enchanted items that I can offload most of the little things to: levitation, healing, fatigue, strength and endurance restoration, bound weapon summoning, recall. I also use healing potions and potions of cure poison and stuff a lot too. Using all that stuff will boost you magical ability quite a bit.
If the character you created doesn't fit what you wanted you may have to design a new one that fits your desires more, though. |

Now that I have my new cd rom in I am doing just that. Making a pure mage. All my primary skills are magcial. No armor no weapons. My secondary has acrobatic, well crap forgot some of them but I do have just armor and i belive longblade but only because there was nothing esle to chose from to help my mage.
I will let you know how it goes. I only play a few hours a night so I dont get a lot of time developing him. I do realize it will be a long hard battle but I am pretty sure once I get the mage high enough he will be a kick ass mage. With enough magical protection I hope I will be able to survive. _________________ Life is what you make it. |

Wabbit the mage birth sign only gives you .5 not 2.0 I initially picked that sign but then redid my character as I would require more mana in the long run. _________________ Life is what you make it. |

You start with 1x Int, the Mage gives you an additional .5, and the race of Breton gives you an additional .5 adding up to 2x. I am aware that there are other combinations of race and sign that can provide you with much more magicka, but at the cost of significant (to me) penalties. |
