How many points to see improvement in bow?

How does the point system work for combat and bows? I raised my bow skill from 10% to 30%, what does that mean? Is that my hit% or my damage%? I didn't notice any difference at all from going to 30% even though it now says I'm a "marksman".

It means how much % change you have to hit a target at a great distance...
Well at least that's what I think..

It states the change to make a critical hit. If a critical hit occurs the dexterity value is added to the damage value of the bow for an increased damage otherwise it is only the damage value of the bow.

I did some searching and I found a lot of topics that dealt with the effect your dexterity has on range weapons. What I want to know is, does putting points into range weapons increase your chance of hitting your target, or does it just increase your chance for a critical strike?

C,mon guys, I know someone must know something about this. Does adding points to bow and xbow skills increase the chance to hit your enemy from a further distance, or does it just relate to critical hits?

I can repost some things I found for a melee weapon based on STR. with only basic 10% rookie skill.

Normal Hit Damage = (STR/10 + 5) - (Armor/10) roughly. ALL Weapons.

NOTE: It does NOT depend on weapon's potential damage.

Critical Hit Damage = (Weapon + STR) - (Armor).

Critical Hit Chance % = Combat Training Skill.

I assume for bows and swords based on DEX it is the same with DEX in place of STR for Critical Hit Damage; but for the Normal Hit Damage, the small STR bonus still uses STR instead of DEX.

Basically all normal hits only do from 5 to 15 damage independent of meele weapon or ranged weapon Rated Damage Potential.

Higher Dexterity attribute make the bow more accurate to hit the target instead of the arrow missing. The farther away the target, the harder it is to hit. Better bows do hit at range more accurately than cheap bows at the same dexterity.

Confusion over this. Combat training for bows does NOT increase your 'Chance to Hit Target'. That is based on quality of Bow and Dexterity.

You will still do roughly Normal Bow Hit Damage of about (STR/10 +5) - (Armor/10) upon a Successful Hit.

A 'Successful Hit' chance for an arrow to actually hit the target is based on DEX and Bow Quality.

Combat Bow Training % increases that 'Succesful Hit Chance' with a single arrow to be a 'Critcal Hit' instead of the smaller 'Normal Hit Damage'.

Bow Critical Hit Damage = (Bow Damage + DEX) - (Armor) only if you actually hit the target.

Combat Bow Training increases the chance for Normal Hits to be Critical Hits; but you still must actually hit the target in the first place based on DEX and Quality of Bow.

Is that clear as Mud?

I'm not disagreeing with you but where do you get your information from? I'm not so sure that training your bow skill only adds to your chances of getting a critical hit. If that was the case, then why doesn't it read as 'critical hit %'? It would make more sense that training in bow would improve accuracy.

It still doesn't seem right to me that putting points into bow only increases critical hit %.

It also *seems* to increase your chance to hit from a distance. I don't know the exact formula, but I do know that as I added more points, the distance at which I could hit targets increased. So that factor does get better as your skill increases.

It may be the case, though, that the distance improves only when you advance to a new "level" of bow mastery. example -- at marksman, and then later at master. Not sure about that either though.

Just keep adding points and your hit percentage (not just the critical chance) will increase..

There is no actual RANGE value for bows to change. They are all fixed. What happens is that you probability to HIT at a far given distance is ZERO.

As you add points to DEX, then your probabilty to HIT a target SEEMs to go up as if it has more RANGE because the DEX - (MISS Value) > ZERO so that some arrows will now hit the target.

So in a way you can say that higher DEX increases the Range via Hit probability is above 0 %.

As far as my testing, combat training definitely increases accuracy across the board, but not the range.

You are seing the critical hits occuring and it looks like you are hitting farther.

I did not test forever, I could be wrong. It is just my in game shooting of thousands of arrows at targets and what is in the game.dat file.

Ranged Combat Training is = Probability that a SUCCESSFUL Hit will be a Critical Hit Damage.

You Must first get the arrow to hit the target Successfully. That is determined by DEX and it seems also by the quality of Bow (as if there is a hiden small DEX bonus in it) not quite sure.

I could hit at a given distance much better with a Hunting Bow than a Short Bow with the same DEX.

The bonus DEX is like for the STR bonus for melee weapons. If you basic requirements to handle a given bow is just meet, no bonus. If you are above that, you get a small bonus. There is a post on this stuff also on the German website link in our MOD discussion thread, and they found this out too, independent of me, and one poster made me aware of it and a link is there to it.

I think it's stupid that we even need to have this discussion. The developers should have thought to explain this in the manual that came with Gothic 2.
