Where did Vi Dominae go?

OK, I rescued Vi from Savant troopers, and she joined my party. We had our fun, but then when we went to Bayjin, she said she was scared, so she was going back to He'Li's in Arnika. Fine. I had my fun with Rynjin and crabs in Bayjin, but that was above my level and decided to go back to do the Mine Tunnels (since apparently that led to Marten's Bluff). I eventually ended up in Arnika again, and Vi was there at He'Li's. I talked to Braffit, who gave me some story about Vi's history, and when I got back to He'Li's, Vi was gone! I checked all of the rooms and the outside perimeter of He'Li's and Vi is nowhere to be seen.

I thought that this was scripted, but He'Li and Braffit both did not have anything new to say about Vi; one would think that He'Li would have seen Vi being kidnapped right in front of her!

So, is this part of the game, or is this a bug?

Are you playing with the patched version (should say v1.2.4 on the main menu screen)? Vi disappearing was a documented bug in early versions, which was supposedly patched and fixed. Now I and other people have reported Myles mysteriously disappearing even with the patch.... Anyway, if you're playing with not the latest version, download the patch from www.wizardry8.com .

If it is a patched version, it sounds like a corrupted save game file, for which I have 4 suggestions for you:
1) Revert to a previous save where Vi is still around
2) Continue the game; Vi is not critical and you can win without her
3) Sir-Tech does advertise on the Wizardry8 website that they will fix corrupted save game files for you, if you have not used a trainer or otherwise cheated (and they say they can detect such a thing). Contact them.
4) Depending on how far along you are, just restart with a new party.

Good luck!

Doh! I am too far along to restart (i've put in 50-60 hours already) and probably too far to revert to a save before she disappeared.

I guess I will just continue the game, though maybe the Sir-Tech solution can work...

It seems as if I seem to have a knack for corrupting my saved games (I do have v. 1.24)...

thanks for the advice

Stuff like this is one reason why Sir-Tech suggests you save often using multiple save-game slots. While bugs like this are relatively rare, if they happen to you and you want the missing NPC (I didn't care about Myles by that point), it's annoying.

From what you described, this isn't likely, but there is 1 other possibility as to what happened that someone else once documented: Between He'Li's and the temple, you got into a fight. Vi came out to help you (without you realizing it) and got herself killed, possibly by monsters you didn't even know about as it could have happened off of your radar screen. Unless your messages were on the most verbose setting, you wouldn't have even gotten a message on screen about this.

Have fun, Wind!

Heh, the problem is that I DO use multiple save slots (I'm up to 272 right now, and I move most of them to anoter folder), but I thought that Vi Domina was SCRIPTED to disappear, so I kept playing on. It's only when I realized that I had no lead or clue as to where she was (many hours later) that I got suspicious. I've been asking all the NPCs about her, which is why I finally came here. I probably could revert to a save where Vi's still around, but that would be 25-30 hours ago. And I really want Vi to be with me when I confront the Dark Savant, because of her connection to him, and because someone (one of the Umpani?) said she may be the daughter of Phoonzang the Cosmic Lord!

Well, so far I played all 3 endings with the same party that included Vi. I know you are NOT required to have Vi in your party to ascend. So I can't tell you what happens when you ascend without her in comparison to if you bring her with you. During the endgame, she recited a few lines that filled in a few details, but maybe you would hear about these details anyway from the Dark Savant? Or another possibility might be that if you don't bring Vi along, the Dark Savant summons her anyway (just a random thought, I have no idea if it's correct). (But then what if Vi is already dead? Too many what ifs here.) Anyway, good luck with Sir-Tech fixing it.

Vi doesn't show up. I don't remember anything about her in the ending conversations. I planned on taking her along during my latest game, but I just can't get myself to hang on to an RPC.

Yah, there's a lot o'stuff they left out, mostly at the end, and all those scripts about meeting you up there are either blind herrings or red alleys.

Well, if you take Vi with you the relationship between her, her family and the Dark Savant is explained. She also makes commentary regarding Phoonzang. Rather than spoil it by posting it here, because maybe you're planning to replay it to and ending with her, PM me if you're interested in the details.
