Newb Q? Stealing and pickpocketing questions

I'm a newb with no instruction manual (bundled game, not burned) and this whole stealing thing is baffling me.

1. I need to get a key for the first mission for the thieves guild off some guy, ostensibly via pickpocketing. However, I don't know how to do it. I've clicked on everything on and around the dude and I can't pickpocket him. How do I pickpocket?

2. I can't steal from the guilds I joined right? But the second thieves guild mission demands I steal a knife from the mages guild. Will this get me automatically kicked out of my guild or would I have to get caught red handed first (I'm a'feared of delayed retribution). This question also extends to things like the many locked doors I want to open up.

And just a random question, whats sanctuary? I have the spell and have no idea what it does.

Thanks

1) You have to successfully sneak up on your victim using the CTRL key. A successful sneak will put an icon on the screen. You then "open" the victim like a container. Take an item and hope you don't get caught.

2) You can't get CAUGHT violating guild rules. Being observed doing bad things will get you in trouble. Selling a stolen item back to its owner will get you in trouble. Merely doing bad things will not necessarily be a problem.

3) sanctuary: "Causes the target to be harder to hit. The magnitude is the value that is added to the target's change to dodge attacks."

Hmm... thanks for the info. Unfortunately for me I can't seem to make that work. This dude is in a room with 4 other people so I can't even get my sneak symbol to light up. My little sneak value of 32 may be too sucky at this point? Or am I just dumb.

you're just dumb...nah only joking 32 is too low for pickpocketing, but even with my 80 skill i still get caught. pickpocketing is very hard so don't feel bad if you can't do it. the best non-training way of increasing your sneak skill is to find a lone npc, go behind them, hold the sneak key down on your keyboard with a weight or something, then go away and have a sandwich and watch tv. sneak rises very slowly, but this is the best way.

an alternative would be just to taunt him until he attacks you and loot his body

****MINOR SPOILER****
To get past that quest, you can do as Wrothgarr says (assuming your speech skill is good enough to effectively taunt), or you can sweet-talk and/or bribe your victim (still speech skill, but doesn't require as high of a skill) until his disposition is quite high (90, IIRC). Then he'll just hand it over.

Oops, just realized that we're in the General forum. This should probably be moved over to the spoilers area... I'll just flag it for now.

I still get caught when pickpocketing and i have security and sneak at 100 and intelligence at 100. So you also must have luck 100, i have only 50.
