I read the FAQ (Wow... Terrific) about the bone bow in the minecrawler cave. The concern was that the crawlers would kill a necessary character. However, Before you get to the bottom there are two templars watching the entrance to the cave of another minecrawler group. They are the SAME minecrawlers as the ones on the bottom (They have a hole connecting the two areas) To avoid losing important characters bait the minecrawlers from the middle cave. There's a ring in this area as well (Flame Protection). Neither Templar guarding this area is required to advance the story.

Most of you may have known this already, but for those that didn't I write this.

Maybe someone else has seen this to verify that it wasn't just coincidental in the game I was playing. has anyone else noticed this?

Nope, not just you..I just played through that quest. I shot a minecrawler with my crossbow, and then ran out. When I went into the area with the bow/ring, there was a minecrawler with about half life left..the one I shot! I got a good chuckle out of it..
