Sorry, didn't think. It's the last celebration before catholic's lent season. One big party from Saturday to Tuesday. Then you get to sober up on Ash Wednesday.

Have fun and be careful if you're getting those beads

At this point in time it really has nothing to do with being Catholic at all. It started long ago as a party to celebrate, eat, dance, ect. before the start of Lent, and had just grown into a creature of its own with no real connection to Lent. The timing is still used and that is about all. They call it Fat Tuesday because you were suppose to eat to your hearts content before the 40 days of fasting during lent. The beer and beads got added over the years and now it is just anouther excuse for some people to act stupid. Not a Catholic thing at all.

What's that? They need an excuse now?

Although it has become something with a life of its own now, and many non catholics participate in it, and also many non catholics use it as an excuse to party, this area of Louisiana where I am is still heavily catholic and many I know still eat fish every day during lent. It's an interesting area. Now, if you are talking about Galveston, they use it as an excuse to party.

The beads and parades came when the celebrations became to big and an area became much more urbanized. There are still small towns that hold the 'original' Mardi Gras that consists of a krewe begging the makings of a gumbo from the surrounding farmers. Well, naturally the farmer wants something in return, so they are given entertainment for a while. Like watching the members chasing after the chickens for instance. I saw video of one once, can get rather interesting.
