Gothic 2: Review @ GameAxis
   

There's a new <a href="http://www.gameaxis.com/articles/view.gax?id=302&gid=679" target="_blank">review</a> for Gothic II at GameAxis. Voice acting and the interface were considered letdowns, while the detailed world earned praise. The review awarded the game a score of 7.0; here's a snippet:<blockquote><em>But actually PLAYING the game is where the pain comes in. The single biggest offender here is an EXTREMELY unfriendly and primitive interface that seems to have learned nothing from the RPGs of the past and falls back on several conventions which are no longer acceptable. The all important inventory management is something that seasoned RPGers will be complaining about most since it’s very unintuitive and does NOT allow you to sort and organize your items in any way. This makes for a lot of painful screen navigation trying to track down use items you require in order to survive or advance. Couple that with the fact that there is no “hot key” feature to have a select few items instantly available to use at the touch of a key, and you begin to understand how inconvenient the system is.</em></blockquote>

Hotkeys take away from the realism. But I agree about the sorting. That would have been nice.

If you mean the hotkeys, the reason is:

Quick keys only makes sense with items that are easily accessible. e.g. an item stored on your belt. At the most, this would mean two or three potions.

Even if the items are stored on your belt, you still need to unclip them etc.

All the games that I have seen that use quick keys, e.g. Diablo, Dungeon Seige etc, let you use potion after potion after potion in a matter of seconds. I dont see how on earth you are supposed to be getting all this from your backpack and using it while still fighting creatures.

Most of the time Gothic is realistic (within the bounds of its world, obviously). I wouldnt like to see it brought to the level of a mindless action game with things such as gratuitous quick keys.

Quick keys on two items (not two types of items, TWO items) would be acceptable. Anything else is just silly.

Sounds to me like the reviewer didn't play the game for very long. He mentions that the game is "extremely choppy" even on a 3 ghz machine - come on! It's only choppy in the harbor areas of Khorinis, and it certainly shouldn't be extreme unless he's maxed out the resolution and maybe enabled AA/AF.

While some of his criticisms are valid, he does seem to emphasise the bad parts way more than the good parts. The sad fact is that precious few games even attempt to do what Gothic II does: scheduled NPCs, predators that will prey on other animals, multiple ways to solve quests, distinct quests for the various classes, lots of neat little secrets buried within the game world, hands-on fighting.

Gothic 1+2 is the only game in town for this kind of action, and it's too damn myopic to award it a paltry 7.0/10.

Oh, and hotkeys are available, btw. It's buried in the .ini though, as the developers really don't think it's the way it should be played.

Agreed.

The game ran pretty smooth most of the time. Many of the problems mentioned fade way after playing for a while. It wouldn't bother me a bit to buy another game using this engine and inteface.
