It's a keeper alright. Don't expect it to be more than it is though. It's a straight ahead shooter. If you don't like twitchy action and having the crap startled out of you (repeatedly) then don't bother.

As far as story it's close to AvP2's marine campaign (in depth & quality), but not up to System Shock. But you're too busy trying not to be slaughtered to think about it while playing.

Oh and it looks amazing, but that goes without saying I guess.

I just hope people make plenty of quality SP missions/mods for it.

Great game so far but i am not far into game yet - probably near halfway through, now in Delta Labs complex.

The Scare factor

The tension is quite high in part due to impressive shadow and lightning effects. The big amount and quality of sound effects probably adding more to the overall atmosphere. Oftenly when you are in tight and mostly unlit corridors, you hear a guttural monsters sound, snarling when they jump out attacking, and sound of someone wailing or some knocking, pounding, or something is messing around in next corridor or room.

Those are not all; the better part is when your vision turning red and seeing a hellish, otherworldly image, but they're rare though. The most used tactic is something suddenly jump out from darkness or attacking you from unexpected direction. They can startled you when just opened a door and certain monster immediately jump on you face - clawing and snarling. Quite often also, when fighting monster in front of you, something else chewing your ass from behind. It really makes you watchful all the time toward many direction and even more important during fighting.

Still, Doom 3 is not an excellent scary game, although certainly in many aspects they were done admirably.

The A.I

The A.I isn't all that impressive, much less you can call it revolutionary. Most interesting is the dead marines; they can rolling around to avoid your fire, or hiding behind box to shoot you. But that is an old trick, many shooters already had it few years ago. All monsters i encountered so far only charging toward you, no group tactic, or using surrounding environment to their advantages, they can teleport behind you but not sneaking up on you, or even more advanced A.I like luring you into trap, feinting, or stalking you.

However, those A.I behaviors are adequate enough for a FPS, and not in any way crippling the game or enjoyment of the game. Plus in core the Doom series is always about pointing and shooting things. With Doom 3 id certainly added more story into game, with little more depth compare to Serious Sam or the non-stop blood fest of BloodRayne. The game levels is well designed, heavily scripted like in Half-Life (when monsters coming out and attack, etc).

Score: 90

And here I sit, Doom3-less. They've pushed the UK release date back another week to the 13th. Um, Friday the 13th.

Ah, well. I suppose it gives me another week to watch hardware prices fall - it was fortunate that last week turned into hell for me and I didn't have time to work out my parts order, after all!

Doom 3 do demand a very fast PC if you want a decent refreshrate with some/all graphic enhancements activated, the loading times will also be very long, if your machine is not top notch.

Graphics: Is, I guess, on par with the best now a days, allthough all screens are very dark (black/grey) due to your ever running around in dark corridors in a spacestation on Mars.

Sound: Surround 5.1 gives a nice addition to the scare effect. Many environmental sounds.

Gameplay: Well compared to DOOM2, doom3 got a lot less enemies, perhaps a little smarter some of them, but a lot fewer at the same time, even if you turn up the difficulty. The weapons are standard weapons with no surprises so far compared to the million other shooters out there. The story (missions) are tried to be washed out like one big mission, as no single mission actually ends in a shoot count score sheet, but instead ends with a new main quest (order). You just take an elevator on the spacestation, and a new mission begins.
The story has so far not been much to write about, eventhough it's much more a part of the players quest(s), than the previous doom 2. Basicly it's still about finding door codes, and accesscards to be allowed to continue to next mission.

I've played around 15 hours now, and all what I've seen so far is the narrow dark corridors inside of a large spacestation on mars, and tons of technical labs and I think I can count up to 5 or 6 different enemies so far and 1 Boss (Big ant-like creature). I must say that I'm starting to get worried about that I get bored with the game before I end it, unless I'm already close to end. I have no idea about it, but related to the story I guess I still have a long way to go.

There is very very little freedom (so far), you follow a very tight path. NPC's are not interactive, just more or less info sources. And yes many enemies are "scripted" they pop up from grates or jump out from dark corners when you pass a certain spot.

I guess I still want to play a few hours, as I still hope that my endless running in this boring spacestation finally will end, and I get to see some other environments and enemies for that sake. Not that Doom2 had many different environments, but they certainly was much more creative when it came to interesting "shooting" arenas.
My score for doom3 so far will be 65%, as I can't find any options with this game so far that makes it remarkable compared to the many other games in this genre

You're right, Michael, it's nothing special. Mildly entertaining, but nothing special. I take it it's difficult to create a special game nowadays.

My review in short, now that I got enough heat sinks:

Doom 3 is a melange of AvP2 (atmosphere), HalfLife (NPC chat repertoire) and System Shock (audio messages). Oh yes, and, of course, Doom 1 and 2 (monsters... and they actually rehashed parts of some of the old levels, I was nearly moved to tears when I discovered this).
All of these games (with the exception of AvP2) were - IMO - better than this one... excepting graphics. Which doesn't mean that I don't consider Doom 3 to be fun, but I don't see myself replaying it 40+ times.

Funniest things:
* Super Turbo Turkey Puncher
* Bathroom mirror

Least funny things:
* I can't concentrate on the game because my subconscious urges me to constantly compare things new and old (as in: "Look, a chunky bulldog thing. What's this chunky bulldog thing supposed to be? Oh, I see, a pink piggy*. Die, piggy."). This, ladies and gentlemen, is seriously detrimental to the atmosphere, but I just can't help it.

I can recommend the Trent Reznor sound pack if you think the sound effects were a bit tame.
