Shadowbane Hacked!

Slashdot has a newsbit reporting that Shadowbane has been hacked yesterday, with severe consequences:

There was a major hacking incident last night on the servers of Shadowbane, a newly released MMORPG by UbiSoft/Wolfpack. The attackers wreaked havoc on at least one game server, with apparent god-like capabilities in-game. There's already an official statement on the forums - 'Ubi Soft and Wolfpack Studios are now working with law enforcement, and we promise all of you that these individuals will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.'" There's a little more information via a post on the SBCatacombs messageboard - apparently the carnage (including many less powerful players getting killed) involved "..teleporting people all over the world, teleporting hostile guards into the safe-holds, bringing in hordes of special event monsters, and teleporting everyone to a city at the bottom of the sea.
Thanks, Sproutnik.

Ugh

Humourous as it may seem, given the current political climate (right wing reactionary) out there, law enforcement is in no mood to be screwing around these days. If these guys get caught not only will they be doing time for certain, they'll probably end up a few 100 grand in the hole after the civil litigation.
Unless I was a terrorist and going all out on cyberwarfare, I wouldn't be screwing around like this at all.

And nowhere will it be mentioned it is UbiSofts fault in the first place. If you leave holes, people will find them and abuse them. I guess the game is so buggy that people have logged on after patching to suddenly have GM abilities. That is probably what happened in this case, only someone decided to abuse it. It may not have even been a true hack.
