With some upcoming overhyped games in mind I would like to know what game editors are good for. What can you do with an editor?
Can you only construct dungeons, hide some items there and after finishing explore these dungeons and find the items where you have placed them?

Or can you implement AI, quests, change the plot ...?
And if so, why should one do those things?

Whether I read a book, play a game, watch a movie ... I'm looking for entertainment. And because I´m not a writer, game developper or movie maker I'm satisfied if the product is well done and entertaining.
If there would be a need to change things then something would be wrong with the original product!

Then, what's so exciting about game editors?

Not all editors give you same things, but generaly it is only about your skills and knowledges.
Usually you can construct new location. You can use new textures etc. there or use games textures.
In some editors you can also add your own quests.
Generaly you can just assign some "sort" of AI that already exists in game to creatures you add or edit. But if you are really skillful programmer, you can modify it.
It really depends on what you want.
Look at Half-Life and its mods. There are hundreds levels programmed by fans. Some use hl textures, weapons, enemies, some programmers do much harder work and use their own texutres, own creatures and different skins for weapons.

It gives to everybody possibility to make new levels to game they like and ussually distribute it freely on internet (so other can use it and have fun with it), it also gives you possibility to make it better (certainly only in some aspects).

Yeah, it really extends the life of the game and it's marketability. I mean Half-Life came out years ago, but with the new mods and add-ons it encourages people to still buy the original game to play the mods.
Plus, I've always enjoyed building my own maps and levels and testing them on other people. It's a lot of fun.

To be a part of it your own is really enjoing, and can make the game last longer!
