D3DX context error - Gothic doesn't run |
|
When I start Gothic I get this error message: "X: XD3D_InitPerDx: can't create D3DX context ! Error: DDERR_GENERIC". I first get a logo saying "Gothic loading", then the desktop disappears and then the error occurs.
I have an AMD K-6 450 MHz, 256 MB, Geforce 2 MX 32 MB, don't know what soundcard, Windows 2000.
I've installed the latest driver for my graphics card (Detonator 28.32) and DirectX 8.1; I tried running versions 1.08h, 1.08j and 1.08k and they all give the same error.
The game did work once, but when I tried loading it again the next day it didn't work anymore. Removing and re-installing the game doesn't help.
Can anyone help? |

You should run DXDiag.exe to find out if your DirectX8.1 is healthy.
Generally speaking Gothic should run (slowly) on your system, assuming your soundcard deserves its name.
The release version is 1.08j. Patch 1.08h will surely kill it, 1.08k might be useful.
Better close all programs running in the background. Gothic doesn´t like virus scanners and overclocking tools.
Good luck. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

There's nothing wrong with DirectX, and I have Gothic v.1.08k.
I can make it run now, if I turn of hardware acceleration of Direct3D in dxdiag, but then it is extremely slow, unplayable in fact. |

The same problem happens to me also, but in a different way. It always happen when the game freezes, and I try to close the program by pressing ctrl+alt+del. I know there is nothing wrong with my directX. It just always happens. _________________ =Farseer=

Do you go right? Or do you go left? A simple decision, yes? No ambiguities. Only the dream of the path not taken! And so one might stand in this place and contemplate for a long while. What will I miss if I go left? What will I lose if I go right? And in my indecision, have I chosen a worse fate? |

I tested the Detonator 29.40 beta (6.13.10.2940, well known for the removed 60Hz limit on Win2k/WinXP...)
With this driver D3DXCreateContextEx always returns an error for hardware/TnL devices on my machine (DDERR_OUTOFMEMORY in my case) with any settings.
Software device works but is unusable.
In fact Gothic does not work with Detonator 29.40 beta (at least on the tested machines).

edit: no problems so far with Detonator 28.32
BTW, I know an system like yours and IMHO Win2k is the wrong OS for that kind of configuration. |

The reference driver for Gothic is the Detonator 12.41
Try to disable anti aliasing (if forced) and enable fog table emulation in the display settings.

ps: do not use tweaking tools, because the Detonator driver architecture has changed and is still in progress. |

OK, I've re-installed windows 98, tried detonator 12.41, tried to disable or enable about every option of my graphic card, I have no other programs running, installed Gothic again, and it still doesn't work
it worked fine once, but that's not what I call "value for money"; this game was just a waste of time and money |

forget what I said above, I finally managed to get the game running: it's running in windowed mode now... this didn't work before when I tried it with the player mod kit (or what's it called), but now it runs smoothly
quite a few hours lost, but this game seems worth it |
