Newest RPGs - They ALL gonna have super system requirements?

I was really looking forward to playing Morrowind, until I found out that my comp won't play it. It's kinda ridiculous, because Morrowind sounds like the type of game that would thrive just on the immensity and depth of its world, and the freedom of the player, and not on jawdropping graphics and such... But oh well, I guess that's the new breed... So I'd like to know, is my system enough for at least SOME of the quality upcoming games?

500 MHz PIII
128 MB RAM
16 MB ATI Rage AGP Pro Turbo

If not, then I guess I'll just have to explore the history of RPGs, not the future =/

All you need is to add some memory (I would suggest you up it to 500 meg) and a new video card. The PIII 500 is fine (mine is a 550 and works well). If you do not do these upgrades then it is unlikely you will be able to play (or at least play well) games from this point on.

Computer gaming has always driven the industry. More and more players become jaded (look at people bashing NWN's graphics when the were raving about graphics like it just a few months ago) and the companies have no choice but to keep advancing the eye candy to placate the masses. More eye candy = more system requirements.

Perhaps the publishers should start putting some dog poop in the s/w boxes. Then people would be happy when they don't get some.

I know what you mean, I just recently upgraded my computer so I could play some of the RPGs that I've had sitting on my desk for a while, though Morrowind really pushed me to upgrade. Funny how the game that made me upgrade STILL doesn't run well on my machine.

@MoonDragon
Now that is NOT a great idea.
I would be seriously If I opened my box to Arx (when the english version finally comes out) and found dog poop.

I say push it. I didn't buy a gig of DDR and a GF4 so that Microsoft Office would run faster, (though Morrowind still runs like a two-and-a-half-legged dog).

If you aren't too worried about graphics, and you missed them the first time around, pick up the two Fallout games (really cheap in one box), Planescape: Torment and Arcanum. You can bet that in terms of storyline and fun they will beat the next few "eye-candy" RPGs, even though the graphics look a little dated now.

Another alternative, is shareware games such as Geneforge from Spiderware Software. It has fantastic game play, incredible story, but Ultima 5 graphics. Download the free trial version and give it a spin.

Yes, there are some great old RPG games, but Arcanum isn't that old, and requiers pretty much RAM...

I guess the specs for Arcanum are quite high, but the graphics are not cutting edge. I like the graphics, though, because they remind me of Fallout. Quite atmospheric...

Though the graphics of Morrowind are undoubtably superior, that game didn't grab me as much as the above three older RPGs, even though I played Arcanum after Morrowind! I had more "affection" for my character in Arcanum too.

But I think I identified most with my Fallout character - taking things "personally", getting revenge, stuff like that.

Back on topic, I guess another "previous generation" possibility might be Ultima Online. I'm not sure what the specs are now, but not too high I think. Though that game left a lot of people scarred for life... Like a "getting mugged" simulation.

OR

Buy Morrowind!

I have:

P3 450Mhz
192 SD RAM
16mb Riva TNT

and it plays nicely! I find 5-10FPS playable (and thats in Balmora). Just follow the various tips around. I play it at Max rez, 1/2 draw distance, 1/3 AI distance and stuff. Just buy it if only to stare at the glossy manual... like I did in the begining.

Sad but true. The fact that RPGs have started to require high end PCs to play with is relatively new. Everyone here remembers the days when a new RPG had an old graphics engine (Might & Magic anyone . Generally 3-D RPGs looked very outdated when compared to the other FPS games. Of course there are exeptions like the first Ultima Underworld. During those times nobody really cared about the shiny 3-D graphics if the game was playable, had a good deep story, quests, diverse character system and world ... (Also Might&Magic, Nethack, early Ultima Series, Fallout series, whatnot!)

Todays gamer is spoiled with graphics. Since the RPG genre took the big transition to 3-D graphics most of us seem to have forgotten the depth of a game. Everyone is expecting great and shiny graphics with super surround sound and music and coated with sugar. At the same time, games start to loose their depth and diversity (Might & Magic IX has a really bad GFX engine and almost no depth at all ). Many games start to be originally designed for Gaming Consoles (like X-Box or PS2) so they can be easily ported over for those (or vice versa, Console->PC).

I am really glad that some of todays games have also great graphics while retaining the great gameplay (Newerwinter nights, Morrowind).

One of the reasons I play MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games) like AC, DAoC, UO, Anarchy Online is the other human players there. It is a whole new world with thousands of human players and they usually do not require a super high end computer.

Wait until you see Asheron's Call 2 in action

Maybe the RPG makers have a deal with the PC makers.
If the get higher requirement then more PC are sold. The get more support from the Pc builders.

Well, I remember the few years when almost NO RPGs were released at all, I think it was during the time when Might & Magic VI was the resurrection to the whole genre. We waited and waited but nothing appeared because (I think) that the companies thought RPGs were not popular at all.

So, I am really glad that we will atleast get decent RPGs currently. The world is so looking great at the moment around this subject
