If you sneak into the Monastery, there's a great two-handed weapon you can buy right from the start of the game, at least in NotR. Gorax sells Ulthar's enchanted staff, which has 70 dmg, 40 Str requirement, gives a bonus of +4 to your 2-handed skill, all for only 1000 gold pieces. It's the only low-Str two-handed weapons aside from pickaxes and fighting pikes I've seen that has a much higher dmg output than it's Str requirement.

That's really useful info, thanks. I think I'll try that next time when I'll be playing from the start. you sneak into the monastery with a sleep spell, right?

As such, you need to dispatch your enemies as quickly as possible and this is where the damage factor is especially important when battling multiple opponents.

I wouldn't agree with that. In bigger fights, the speed is imporant. 2 handers are just to slow. my strategy of beating up orcs with a 1 hander is, simply hit them twice when they attack, run around hit twice again, run back, block, hit, run around, hit, run back, block, hit... with this tactic i managed to kill 2 orc warriors when my char was still a low level and 3 hits could killed me. it took 5 tryes, but i was happy to manage that deed. it couldn't have been possible to do it with a 2 hander, because my swings would be slow and the other orc would have killed me while i was beating the first one.

if you get my point, it's about the speed and evading attacks. it took more than 10 hits back than to kill an orc, but i did it. 2 orcs in the same time, over 20 hits, and at most 2 hits back. that's 1:10 and i think it makes you a pretty good figher.

There's a big rock to the right of the entrance. Stand in the middle (in front of where the rock is sticking out slightly towards you) and jump up. You should be able to latch onto the top and climb up. From there, make your way onto the roof of the monastery and then jump down. You can buy the key to the monastery entrance from Gorax.
