As a mage I prefer to use crossbows as the main backup to magic spells. But for those situations where a hand weapon is still needed, try using the one-hand weapons that are based on dex and not strength (Rapier and Master sword).
That way you don't also have to pay points to increase strength, only dex -- since both crossbows and the above mentioned swords are based on dex only. This saves more learning points for magic and alchemy. _________________ imposterAZ

There's a bug though that doesn't add dex to a critical hit with a dex based sword. So, although you can use them, your critical hits won't be as big w/o strength. _________________ Just watch out you don't stress yourself out.
