Graphics, because it's not worth playing if the graphics are not well done. I can do without blood if the game is otherwise done well. And size matters. The bigger the game world, the more into it i get. The overall plot to me, means very little. I pay attention enough to the plot to figure out what the next lever I have the hit, the next being I must slay, and so on and so forth. I just cant get into caring about any char in any game other than my own, they are a bunch of lifeless, stupid automatons. Rarely have i seen a story in a game worth paying attention to anyway, they are usually the standard "Bad guy takes over poor innocent villagers", or "you girl has been taken by bad guy", etc. _________________ “Then away out in the woods I heard that kind of a sound that a ghost makes when it wants to tell about something that's on its mind and can't make itself understood, and so can't rest easy in its grave, and has to go about that way every night grieving.”-Mark Twain |

I'm surprised that AI isn't all that important to some people. I personally think it is alot better with high AI then good props.
Anyway, here is my list:

I agree (I put it in my first group). However, very few (if any) games really have significant AI for creatures or NPCs. I suspect that truly good AI is still well beyond the capabilities of most game designers.
BTW, as a side note, imagine a game where the AI is TOO good - such that you as a player cannot manage the game . _________________ When everything else in life seems to fail you - buy a vowel. |

Wow - nice to see more people join in the conversation.
The only non-RPG games that meet the criteria as far as I'm concerned are Halo and GTA3. There's a game coming out one of these days called HAVEN that might actually live up to all the criteria, but I'm only basing that on the game description they have at the website:
Haven: Call of the King may just be the most important videogame of all time. With its all new FreeFormer™ gameplay, Haven, Call of the King has introduced a new videogame genre, which allows the player to experience multiple gameplay mechanics blended together in a seemingly boundless Universe. Haven is the first game to truly combine groundbreaking technology and unbelievable real-time fully-open worlds. Played out through an epic tale of a hero who seeks to liberate his people from the tyranny of enslavement, HAVEN provides total freedom to move anywhere both on foot or vehicle and spans across seamless transitions between turret based shooting, boat racing, bike battles, plane flight, gladiator arena combat and space exploration. Simply put, HAVEN transcends traditional videogame genres, to deliver the most diverse gameplay experience ever realized.
- I mean that SOUNDS pretty amazing, and the screens look great, but of course I won't know it's actually in my hands. |

Just look at the new action games like Battlefield 1942 and UT2003. In those games, the AI doesn't get better if you play on a harder dificulty. A friend of mine asked me a question, "Do you have to give the bots wallhack to make them harder?". I thought that was a good question, I hate when the bots got Wallhack aka see through walls. They know were I am allmost all the time. Thats why multiplayer is better then singleplayer at times.
Nah, I don't think that they should develop the AI to more then we can handle. _________________ There once was a youngster, DzD

There's a fine line between good AI and annoyingly good AI (or AI that "cheats"). The best AI I ever encountered was actually in a player-made mod for Quake 2. When the servers were empty I would practice vs bots offline using this mod and it was genuinely spooky how they would learn and adapt from your play style. I'm sure there are games out there with far more advanced AI systems, but I've not played them |

Funny enough I found it challenging to play on expert level in the old game UFO: Enemy Unknown (named XCOM in the US). It's not exactly a role-playing game... Anyway, I remember it as the first time I thought "Hell, this AI can be as good as myself" OK, that was an exageration.
Of course AI is very important for a good play, I didn't put it in the beginning of my list simply because PC is ALWAYS worse than human player, and as soon as you've found its weakness - you're the winner. That's why I think that nice storyline and eye-candy design in RPGs are really important - by the end of the day, they all are nothing more than fairy-tales. Fairy-tales are supposed to by beautiful in the first place |
