As said yesterday, Middle Earth Online is now officially announced. Here's the press release minus the legal stuff:<BR><FONT size=2>

<P>VIVENDI UNIVERSAL GAMES REVEALS MIDDLE-EARTH ONLINE DETAILS AND SIGNS DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT WITH TURBINE ENTERTAINMENT</P>
<P>LOS ANGELES, Calif., May 9, 2003 – Vivendi Universal Games, Inc. (VU Games) announced today that it has entered into a production agreement with Turbine Entertainment Software Corp. to develop "Middle-Earth Online," a massively multiplayer (MMP) game to launch in 2004. The game will be developed as part of VU Games' long-term agreement with Tolkien Enterprises to create interactive entertainment based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic novel "The Lord of the Rings." </P>
<P>The 3D role-playing game (RPG) will immerse players in the Middle-earth world where they will choose their identities from a cast of archetypal Tolkien characters, form kinships, build race-specific dwellings, explore the landscape, craft unique items and weapons, and perform myriad other activities to bring the world-renowned fantasy realm to life. </P>
<P>"We are extremely excited to be working with a world-class developer like Turbine. Their track record and proven expertise in building, launching, and supporting massively multiplayer games is exceptional, making them the right partner for a franchise as beloved and well-known as J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings,'" said Jim Wilson, EVP Product Development, Vivendi Universal Games. "Together, our goal will be to bring the vision and spirit of the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien to life in 'Middle-Earth Online.'"</P>
<P>More information about "Middle-Earth Online" can be found at </FONT><A href="http://www.lordoftherings.com/meo">http://www.lordoftherings.com/meo</A>. </P>
<P>About Turbine Entertainment Software Corp. </P>

Turbine is publishing it.. there goes any chance of it being any good.

AC2 bombed.. AC1 is barely alive.. why do people keep giving Turbine money to make games?

Sorry Ammon, I told you a few months ago Turbine would have nothing to do with Middle Earth. Guess I was reading the wrong gossip

My appologies

Now I wonder if Chris Taylor (Dungeon Siege) is still heading up the project, I told you that part too. Maybe I wont have to appologize for that bit of info

hey its okey, i forgive you

i have read posts from Chris Taylor the lead designer for MEO over at the Lord of the Rings official boards and he informed us some months ago that the Chris Taylor for MEO is not the same Chris Taylor that made Dungeon Seige (thankfully), which is a common mistake. There are 2 Chris Taylors in the computer game industry, hehe. (although, not saying outright that dungeon seige sucks, i have to admit it was much to my relief upon hearing that news.) i forget exactly what game the MEO Chris Taylor worked on, i just remember that i thought it was a good game at the time... rats, i wish i could remember..

Geesh. Guess that means, sorry again!

Knowing it was a 'C' and a 'T' word just wont let me slide will it?

Dog gone it! How many Chris Taylors do we have in this blasted industry!

Hey wait! It was Total Annihilation! Do I get some points back now? Lol

(I knew we weren't talking about the Wide Reciever!)

again i say, its no problem...

i went and dug up the dirt on this Chris Taylor guy for you:

this is a quote from RPGCodex:

"Chris Taylor, one of the main designers of Fallout and Stonekeep for Interplay, as well as Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring for the GameBoy Advance provides his unique spin on the design of CRPGs..."

so its not the C.T. that made Dungeon Seige. phew.

"What makes this game third generation? The graphics engine will exhibit Turbine's trademark of excellence and innovation. It will employ some of the newest innovations in the field. This will also be the first game in its genre designed specifically to be casual player friendly." (www.middle-earthonline.com)

EDIT -- i think i judged it too harshly the first time. goes to show how much expectations will rise regarding this game...
