Bard's Tale (InXile): Preview @ PC.IGN |
|
PC.IGN has whipped up a hands-on preview of The Bard's Tale after Brian Fargo called by with the latest build. Here's a snip that summarises the game:
The Bard's Tale runs on the Dark Alliance engine. You console gamers probably already know they engine well already since it was used for both Dark Alliance games as well as the recently released Champions of Norrath. Like the other games using the engine, The Bard's Tale is an Action RPG in the vein of Diablo, only with more story and depth. While the 2004 version of The Bard's Tale will include several allusions to the original, it is not a remake or sequel to the classic series, and you can expect a top-down view instead of the first-person 3D view from the originals. The game is non-linear with several side-quests, and you can get into some of the higher level areas early in the game if you can figure out how, but you probably won't last too long until you're strong enough and have plenty of powerful weapons and songs in your arsenal.
|

correct me if i am wrong, but the dark alliance game engine has been used for about 4 other games, none of which were pc games.
Yet bards tale is also a pc game? Or isnt it? Is this another game pursuing the market of 14 year olds that want to remmeber games that came out before they were born like fobos? Weird.
It is listed as a pc game, but for some reason I think this is false advertising. The reason is that all of the previews show x box screens. Why would they show screens that look like crap in 720 x 240 if they have a pc version in development?
Dont mind me if Im wrong, Im just getting this impression that something is fishy based on the newsbits i read here. |

the only fishy impression i'v here, is just bard's tale will be another consolish product. their main target will be console audience as BG:Dark alliance and FO:POS were.
with a PC release planned for 2005 (way behind the console release), no surprise they'r talking and showing only x-box/PS2 screenshots...obviously the game is actually developped with consoles hardware in mind, and PC version won't start before some time...if it start at all.
i don't expect anything from this game, i don't even consider it like an rpg... i just hope they 'll get a good cash return from console players and start making a REAL RPG for PC... or they'll just continue to do consolish games, like many others editors theses days (Interplay sigh) |

I'm not aware of the Snowblind engine being used outside of consoles, either. So far every Snowblind-based product is a gameplay clone and I've little doubt the basic dynamics of BT will be the same. The different dialogue system in BT will be the difference if it works...but it certainly sounds like an action-adventure rather than a true RPG.
As for the market, I asked Brian Fargo about that in an IRC dev chat: he simply believes the console market is bigger and can therefore sell more copies, despite the core console audience not being familiar with BT. At this point I think he's wrong about the market for this game - but I guess that really all depends on how the game pans out. _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |

If he only cares about sales, why doesn't he just call it something nipponese such as "Crystal Adventure Magic XXVI", that's the language the 14 year olds understand... |
