What, being able to play without dying? Not stupid, no...
I still die every few minutes. Mostly because I'm doing 'stupid' things like trying to beat the game with a pickaxe and digger pants. Or going for the orc hammer at level 6. Or facing minecrawlers with no stats above 20 and a damage 29 axe and light rogue armor at level 8.
But realistically... should a game be so hard you have to die if you know what you're doing? Dying in a game has never appealed to me. I like games like BG where you never die if you know the rules. Not dying when replaying is a sign of a good game in my books...

Definitely so.
...on the other hand, there are games where dying was crucial to the plot... like Torment . Though I also detest unduly difficult games where you die at each and every corner. That's very distracting.

If the end left you feeling like that, I guess I can see why you're disappointed. It didn't leave me feeling that way. I had this indescribable rush of victory when the sleeper got sucked away--it was almost as much fun as finding a sale on Kenneth Cole's! I wouldn't trade it for anything. |

And some 25000 ore will be worth something in the outside world, what do you think?
Actually, I'm not sure it will be worth anything. If you remember, the character asks Saturas if people will be harmed when the barrier is destroyed. He said no, but objects affected but magic will be ruined. No more runes, swords, armor, etc that has been affected by magic.

Ahhh, but we still have all those coins from the big tower (minus those I gave all my trader friends as a present, just because I liked them)... those, at least, should be worth something.

Then let's hope the inflation rate has not increased drastically in Myrtana.

Death was FUN in Torment. Knowing that you couldn't die colored every action somewhat. There wasn't this overwhelming fear of 'I'd better not... I hate reloading' or anything. As the Nameless One, I *wanted* to kiss Grace and die horribly. I released the statue with the ultimate curse word and died hideously (THAT was fun... the whole description of feeling your eyes and ears burn away from the power of the curse, your organs shatter, and you spiralling into darkness to the sound of Morte going "That... that was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard!" ). I tore my eye out to pop one I'd left behind a few decades earlier in.
Planescape was incredible.
I wish a friend (ex) hadn't made off with half my games, including it... :grr:

Planescape was truely a unique game. It definately broke the mold.

I think Ore will not be destroyed. It existed before the barrier and will exist after.
Another thought: when I saw Sleeper, I thought: he looks like a gigant minecrawler, and it is blueish. It must have some connection to Ore, as minecrawlers do.
BTW, there are red chunks of ore in the temple at the very entrance. Interesting. |

I didn't like the ending. Someone else said that you should've at least seen the barrier go down, instead of the Sleeper dying, and I agreed with that. I also didn't like the ending of Deus Ex. It seemed like all your choices were bad. You could rule the world, or merge with a creepy giant robot to rule the world, or you could send everything back to the dark ages. I didn't want to rule the world, dammit! Especially not in secret, controlling everyone without them knowing I was controlling them. And another thing: (about Gothic, this time ) I'm gonna be disappointed when Gothic 2 comes out and they find some excuse to take away all of my supercool magical powers. But, I'll buy it anyway. |

I think the game was more about fulfillment throughout then just at the end, this wasn't your basic hack and slash your way to the big bad boss in the end for an ultra climactic fight and win. It was more about achieving small goals each one getting you closer to your ultimate goal: Getting out.
I mean wasn't it the greatest feeling when you were finally able to join a camp? I felt great every time I did it, and then the promotions were extremely gratifying as well. Beeing promoted to guard made me so proud of myself somehow. I think the game succeeds in that aspect.
All you have to do to like the ending is keep in mind what you are doing and what your character's goal is: To get out of prison. It wasn't anout saving the colony from a demon. That part was just another task you had to do to get out. Basically I saw the character as a great manipulator of just about everyone in the prison. He had only one thing in mind, freedom, at any cost. He even used his friends for his own purposes many times over, he probably even got one of them in big trouble too towards the end.
Also the game hints at part 2 with little setups like Lester's acquisition of the deed for the old tower etc. I have a feeling we will be visiting Lester in part 2 in his new house |

I agree. Now I looked at some of my screenshots again and thought: it was good. The end did not really matter as I new that there would be a sequel anyway. |

hey i know how you all feel, i spent a week of my christmas vacation playing the game straight and at 3:00 in the morning i finally beet the game and i almost punched my computor, although the ending sucked the big one, it doesent suprise me at the least. i mean every good game that has a sequel has a crappy ending, like in baldures gate 1. the first thing i said after watching the ending was SEQUEL.

You started the game with a goal, escape. Other goals developed along the way, destroy the barrier, beat the sleeper. You did those things. There was a very cool movie to go with your victory, The Sleeper getting sucked away while you watch. What more do you want?
A small list: Someone wants to see the barrier fall. So, basically you have difference in cinematic vision with the cinematographer. Oh well, that covers it for me with just about every film I've ever seen.

Sorry, wrong button, I'm not done ranting.
Know what? Forget it, I just deleted my whole long post. You guys don't really care (which you shouldn't, no hard feelings )and I promised myself I'd stop reading this thread. So, have a fun! I'll catch you guys in a less emotional (for me) thread!
