Old covers

A while back (possible on RPGDot) I saw a feature about Gothic 2 while it was still in development. Anyway tje cover looked something like the film Gladiator (you know, with Russel Crowe standing with a sword in one hand). Anyway what happened to this cover? It was way cooler than the cover now (you might see a pic of it in an ad if you move your head to the left a bit..). Did the Gladiator peopel threaten to sue pb if they didn't change the cover or am I just dreaming the whole thing? (It is very probable that I was so please don't mock me if it turns out I was dreaming!! ). Does anyone else know what I'm talking about??

Using cool covers is against JoWooDs´ company policy.

Its actually just the right size, it doesn't go under any of my desktop icons or anything. I don't want one that covers the whole screen, ugh.

Shmaugus, I asked you once before to stop posting this link. A user reported your post, so he obviously felt annoyed by it. This means you´ve earned your first warning.

Deciding covers, packaging and marketing is the publisher´s business. Most developers have zero influence on this. Sometimes even the name gets changed - for example to Divine Divinity by CDV. Especially JoWooD is known for refusing cover proposals made by the developers. PB said they gave them many more spectacular pics than the conservative one finally used.
An even more drastic example is Europa 1400 - The Guild (2nd Ed. in Germany). This game has such a butt ugly cover that I wouldn´t consider buying it if I saw it in a shop. Of course the developer spoke against this cover. JoWooD chose it anyway.
Please note I´m complaining about the covers. Package design and the production value of JoWooDs´ boxes, manuals ans CDs are top notch in Germany.

Both.

Some of these decisions just don´t make sense. Take The Guild for example. This game was s huge success in Germany. Dirt cheap production costs and more than 100k full price sales. The 1st edition cover was okay, so why change it to some pic showing an ugly 15th century trader - badly rendered, not painted? Stupid. And that´s only the harmless part of the story. They did many more things to this developer.
