It will grow on you. The people who dislike it most are those who always played dual or multiclass characters in 2nd ed with the expectation that it might take longer, but you'd end up stronger than a single class character.
Higher is always better now. Ta da. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

Well, first of all I haven’t played p&p for 10 years. The gaming group somehow grew apart. Anyway back then I played Dungeons & Dragons (no BASIC D&D not Advanced). It wasn’t much fun so we switched to using Games Workshop’s Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play. As I recall it, this was a great game. I don’t really know but I don’t think it’s that huge now (if it ever was).
Another great RPG was West End’s Star Wars as a few of you also mentioned. |

I hated basic D&D. Advanced was so much better. I LIKE rules you have to think about and less stereotypical roles for demi-humans.
West End Games Star Wars is simply one of my favorite. The system was easy, character generation was fast, and of course the setting was great. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

1 DnD all forms what I played the most
2 FASA's Shadowrun and Earthdawn 2nd most played. Earthdawn underrated imo.
3 Ars Magica because its got a cool spell system. whitewolf ripped this off! sorta, but with a great gm (which I had) it can be very cool!
4 Champions because the superhero creation generation was cool, and the combat reminded me of Car Wars for some reason.
5 Warhammer frpg, because the job system rocked
6 Gurps/Palladium... only because I bought alot of it, but never played it much, so it should be up here, I used alot of it for ideas.
7 Call of Cthulu would be higher but never got a good gamking group going for it. good material to read though.
8 White Wolf has to be up here since i was dragged to play it and I did enjoy some of it, but I hated the 'mechanics' and the gangstyle clans/families/cults/domains etc etc etc it gets to be like playing Werewolf mobsters, Vampire mobsters, Mage mobsters...
9 Cyberpunk - played it like a squad mech wargame for some reason and enjoyed it, a couple months played only.
10 stuff.

How did White Wolf rip off Ars Magica, as the guys who created Ars Magica founded White Wolf? _________________ "It has been a grand journey- well-worth making once."

I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to SPEED around a city, keeping its SPEED over fifty, and if its SPEED dropped, it would explode. I think it was called, "The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down."

Going to have to go with 2nd Ed AD&D. Although I played many others, I always went back to AD&D. The reason I prefer 2nd Ed over first was for the simple fact that the PHB and DMG were laid out in a more logical fashion, information was easier to find than in 1st Ed and some of the fat was trimmed. My only gripe about 2nd Ed was the whole censorship bit with the demons and devils (which remained in my campaign regardless). As for 3rd Ed, it just doesn't do it for me. Love the artwork though... particularly in the Monster Manual.
Other games that stood out for me were the Warhammer and Palladium FRPGs, and the 2nd Ed of the Gamma World RPG. _________________ "Hammer of the Gods... We drive our ships to new lands... Fight the hordes, singing cry, Valhalla I am coming..." |

Gamma world! "There's a name I've not heard in quite some time". I remember the flow charts best from that game. They where the first to do that. It was a very cool idea! I didn't know there was a 2nd ed. _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

Realms of Arkania!
well ok it's my only pen&paper I played but it's very cool with a realistic medieval fantasy world... very detailed background story
well.. a "Wizardry" based pen&paper would be cool wouldn't it ? |

I loved the Runequest world. That must be the most detailed world of any RPG, I think.
Once I met some Zulus from South Africa and I was actually able to appear knowledgeable about tribal customs from what i remembered about Prax. (Unless they were just humoring me) |

I was hoping to be original here but then read other peoples posts and realised that my tastes are similar to others. So top list is:
1) D&D 3rd Edition (Forgotten Realms) - Really did imporve on 2nd edition and made things a lot more flexable. TSR/WotC actually seemed to listen to players when designing it.
2) AD&D 2nd Edition (Forgotten Realms) - May be inferior to 3rd edition but I know it best and have way too many books to simply stop playing it
3) Shadowrun - OMG a game where you start out and your characters are actually reasonaly powerful. Great setting shame the 2nd edition got too caught up with the magic system.
4) Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay - Great career system and great background world - best religion and magic system and best Deamons.
Thats about it for now I have played others like Vampire, Star Wars, DC Heros, Rifts. GURPS but not relly enough to judge them. Personally what makes a roleplaying game fun to me is the people I play with. I really can't stand heavy roleplay - I like to get together with friends and have a laugh and do some roleplay. I find taking regular breaks means that people can relax and will concentraite on the game when they neeed to _________________ "The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds; and the pessimist fears this is true."
