Ultima-X rumors

Stratics has a <A href="http://uo.stratics.com/news/CommunityNews.shtml#newsitem1051941422,45391," target=_blank>report on a rumor</A> regarding Ultima-X, quoted from the June issue of GMR magazine, page 21:<BR>

<BLOCKQUOTE><i>"The really exciting news this month should be going public as you read this. For over a year now, Origin has been quietly woodshedding Ultima-X its new MMORPG. And it’s going to surprise you. I can't say anything just yet except maybe three quick words: Unreal Warfare engine. Watch this one. EA surprised everyone when Battlefield 1942 showed up out of nowhere last year. They may do it again."</i></BLOCKQUOTE>Interesting stuff <BR>

I really hope this is NOT true!
Ultima X a MMORPG??? The Ultima games with Roman numerals have always been great single-player games.
If they would call it Ultima Online II, ok. But NOT Ultima X!!!
Unless it will be a single-player game (maybe with a multiplayer component)...
But I doubt that...

When is this MMORPG MADNESS ever going to stop???
These last two weeks brought us 3 new announcements of new MMORPGs.
Who the f**k is supposed to play all these ???
And now, even out beloved Ultima shall be turned into a mindless and spiritless Online desaster??? As if EA hasn't already ruined the Ultima branch enough!

This is madness! Madness! MADNESS!

This news, be it a rumor or fact, surely ruined my day

The MMORPG frenzy is freakin crazy. These companies keep churning out these games with no thought as to how they can possibly compete. Does any company out there think anybody can compete with games like Star Wars Galaxies and World of Warcraft. I tried EQ twice, Anarchy online once, and I was bored every time in about 30 minutes. I do not subscribe to a MMORPG now and I`m not even sure I`m willing to pay for Galaxies. At 10$ or more a pop, how many of these games do they think people can pay for.
This is a more serious problem than just a current developer fad. The infrastructure required to run a multiplayer game is relatively massive and expensive. Most of these companies are bank rolling their future on these games and there is no way most are going to succeed with the level of competition out there. Many good companies are going to go under because of this.
Multiplayer games are setting the industry back a decade or more in terms of quality of the software. Essentially it is equivalent to the reality tv craze. In a MMORPG, they don`t need to pay great writers and scripters to come up with a great gaming experience. They just create a map, an advancement system, some things to kill, and send you on your way. Thank you for your 50$ game purchase and 10$ or more a month in fees sucker. I have been playing Ultima games since Ultima 3. I bought every Ultima, add-on, World of Ultima, and Ultima Underworld game they made and I loved all of them (except . I bought Ultima Online and played for a while, put something heavy on a key to beat a dummy until my sword skill (or whatever it was) went up, went into the forest and got trounced by a dang farm animal. The dungeons were more crowded than some of the bars in my town on a friday night, and I had absolutely no idea what to do. Why these games are as popular as they are is beyond me.
I would love to see multiplayer implimented in a more limited way. For instance, how cool would it be to be able to adventure around in a new game of morrowind with 6 friends and providing systems for them to cooperate or compete through the story. A quick talking diplomat distracts some guards while a thief sneaks into a treasury and makes off with the loot.whatever...later

@jski: nice words...I especialyl like 'Essentially it is equivalent to the reality tv craze' and I agree. But I am also worried about these Online evolution. I was hoping, that the hype would be over in 2003, but instead, 2003 seems to bring us even more Online games than all the other years before.

What makes me sooooo sad, next to not at all understanding the popularity of the genre, is that sooo many good companies like eg Sir Tech, Arkane are getting into serious trouble because of doing story immersive games instead of simple online arcade...

I also wonder, if Online games are really so popular, as most people here seem not to like them, acc to the comments and none of my friends like them either...and if the industry tries to move us into some corner here...like Microsoft tries to embed its TCPA protocol and so on...but that's another story

Popularity of MMORPGs???

Completely agree with the sentiments being expressed so far, especailly jski <applause>

Garrett asks the question if these on-line (so called) RPGs are even popular. Well I personally have no idea (only ever looked at one MMORPG - Red Moon, which had horrific PvP tatics going on, just don't get me started), but software companies after not completely inadpt (again, don't get me started on the whole sad story with the release of Sir-Tech Canada's Wizardry , so someone would be doing the research and pounding the calculator and can convince investors enough for them to fund development of these things.

This may say more for the power of hype than solid investiment practices, but so many different people / companies can't ALL be completely wrong, somewhere someone are buying / paying for these games - probably the teen market with two middle-high income parents who are willing / ambused into paying for these games. A market (as a whole - not having a go a teenagers) with a short attention span and not willing to get into the depths of a well crafted story.

Anyway, I'll finish off my rant with say this, i hope this will be a passing fad, the game buyer / player trend will again evolve back to demanding more substance and content in their entertainment, at least this is my hope.

I think the genre will tend back toward the single player games when most of these MMORPGs die. Something like 50+ MMORPGs in development or already released. There is absolutely no way the market can bear them. Let the games begin.

I agree with most of your points, but UO is the only good MMORPG out there. It sounds like you tried to play it as a single player game to me. You need to go interact with people, not go into the dungeons and fight the mindless creatures.

It sucks now, since they ruined all the PvP stuff. But its the ONLY MMORPG I have ever played that I was actually scared to go into the wilderness because of the PEOPLE, not the monsters. I loved it for that.

And when I was tainted by the evil (From a woman no less), it sure was fun being one of those people in the woods everyone was so afraid of.[/quote]

Agreed

Ultima X should be single player.

EA didn't do any market research on this one or else they'd know this.

I wish EA would just get totally out of the RPG business. They do nothing but absorb and destroy great RPG development houses leaving nothing at all afterwards - except an Ultima X MMORPG that nobody wants.

Guys, there's a giant chance that this is a duck. Due to technical limits of the Unreal engine the gameworlkd would have to be cut up into incredibly small zones...

I'm not too sure on this, but I doubt this can be overcome with a simple codebase fix.

Read up on the UT engine @ http://udn.epicgames.com/ to get yourown impression

mmorpg

I cannot tell you why these games are so popular. Essentially they are chat rooms with graphics and things to kill. I probably am guilty of playing Ultima Online as a single player rpg, but chatting with people is something I like to get away from with a game. I have to deal with people all day at work, my friends, and in my classes. Gaming is a kind of refuge and I feel like it is disappearing. Like someone here said, it would be kind of impractical for the unreal engine to be used in a MMORPG, so I`m still holding out hope this will turn out to be totally wrong, or a new single player Ultima.
