I like that better than no patch for a couple of weeks, as we've been treated to on other games in the past... At least they are fixing things

I am not complaining about the patches, that's the least they can do and they have to after releasing a buggy title.

Now before you all blame me for a crusade against MMORPGs:
My favourite game of the past years (Arx Fatalis) has been patched a lot, wasn't even playable without a patch in the first sales version in Germany.

I am just mad with publishers, who push buggy or unplayable games out knowingly. Especially with MMORPGs I do wonder, why on earth they are having beta tests with several hundreds or thousands of players and then publish a game that needs fixing of critical errors every other day (I am not saying there is bugfree software, but a game MUST be playable when being released! Or would you buy a car, which won't start or a CD, that has only 5 instead of the labelled 9 tracks on it?)

The saddest thing about this all, is that we, the players, got used to this and are not even complaining about it anymore.

That is right, Garrett. We have all been numbed and conditioned by the trend; we've gotten used to it, and so we dont complain very often.

The reason for this problem has two main factors, the way i see it. First, these games are getting more complicated with every release. I am a coder and it is unbelievable how much code is involved with current releases. So whats the problem with that? Well, the more code is in a project, the more errors will occur. Programming is chaotic, put simply. If something can go wrong, most of the time, it WILL go wrong; not necessarily because of human error, but rather because of the way computers execute the code. It all has to do with how the C++ compiler and linker translates the code into machine executable, and sometimes it translates not the way the programmer intended, and so the coders have to try and compensate, which most of the time creates new, different instances of errors. Bleh !!! thats why i dont program anymore, its a pain in the blimey !!! But still, that is no excuse for releasing buggy software. We shouldnt have to put up with it. Which leads me to my second point: the publishers and marketing departments know enough from the coding team about the woes of these ever-increasingly mammoth complex projects, that they have made a logical policy to release the software on an accelerated schedule, in order to remain competitive. And yes, this is a VERY competitive field that is catering to a rather small (though growing), niche audience. So thats my explanation, and its true as far as i know. You probably knew this already, but i thought i would point out the obvious for us, just in case.

Gnrh...July 4th, independence day of the galaxy. Somehow that annoys me. Shouldn't these games be _separate_ from our own world?

But that's the problem right there, isn't it? We wouldn't buy a car that won't start, but we do buy a game that won't start It's easy to blame publishers in this, and they should be blamed for it too. But wouldn't it be a better world if we became better consumers and NOT buy games until they are really ready? We complain and moan about it, but really we don't put our money where our mouth is, and as soon as the next big title comes out we rush to buy it. If publishers knew that a game wouldn't sell unless it's completely ready, then they would wait. As it stands now though, they couldn't care less about the state of the game. As long as people can "play" it they can release it.

Mind you, I'm as much a culprit in this as anyone else. I did buy SWG on day 1. But I'm just pointing out that complaining about it won't fix anything. You already gave your money to the publishers... They don't care anymore. What if no one bought the game until the reports said it was ready to be bought? A few braver souls among us would plunge in head first and report about the game and say if it's playable or not...

...wait a minute! Isn't that a reviewer I just described? hehe
