There isn't much decent equipment you can get right off the bat. You will find yourself with crap weapons and armor until you join one of the camps. All the camps will give you one thing of free armour when you join. As for weapons, you will be able to buy better ones once you get into the second chapter.

As for making the game easier your best bet is to take a look at the strategy guide for Gothic here at this site.

You can find a bone bow in the Old Mine and an Orc hammer near the Mountain Fortress. Both are decent weapons, and you'll get them for free if you're fast enough.

A few hints:

-talk to every named character in the Old Camp
-avoid combat until you have an armour and an accetable weapon
-get all the newbie quests, then ...
-... find the NPCs which offer to guide you to the two other camps. They clean the roads for you.
-visit the other camps and repeat the first 3 steps.
-invest the first few level upgrades in strength
-free armor can be found in one location, armor can be bought in another place
-free weapons are everywhere, but usually hidden.

*Use more than one save slot! Save in a new slot before you enter dungeons or touch a winch!*

Get rich quick!!!

pick up everything you see! I got rich off of plants
Get diggers trousers quick so you can get into th molerat scavanger meat trade REMBER fry the meat before you sell it.
Fisk is the best guy if you want ore or don't have much strength and want weapons.
Did you know that wou buy raw steel (40) than do all the other stuff you get a crude sorwd that is worth (50)
If you want a really good weapon ( this is really hard and you'll have to practiace and save allot) Lure swamp sharks out of the swamp and onto the templars. Then once they are dead and you have lured the beast to a templar that can kill it go back and mug till you drop!
