I just tryed getting past the gate as a meatbug and you can easily fit under, you can get back out again as any monster that the orcs leave alone eg a scavenger, you can get these scrolls at the monastary. Which is easier than battling skeletons.

In the past when I play as mage, old battle axe is what I get. I get it in chapter two when all transformation scrolls are for sale. It only requires 36 strength and does 64 damage. I carry that weapon until I get Uriziel. There are other much better weapons around but all require more strength. For a mage I prefer to invest points in skills instead of strength.

In Chapter 4 you can find the Warrior's Voice Axe (96 dmg) on the dead Okyl.

You can get that in any chapter if you beat him up, but you will probably get killed by all the other mercanerys in the hollow.

It is why I prefer Lee Axe into Chapter 1 -- when I beat Lee nobody enters,

I am replaying the game right now. I think the game is easy enough in first two chapters with stone crusher. Anything better is overkill.

So far I invested two levels on single handed weapon and really like it. It's faster and easier to hit than two handed. Your enemy rarely block your attack. You hit almost every time. I prefer to fight skeletons with 1 handed weapon, because strangely it's easier.
